Constraints on Z' solutions to the flavor anomalies with trans-Planckian asymptotic safety

Abhishek Chikkaballi et al.

Summary: Motivated by flavor anomalies in b -> s transitions, we incorporate minimal models with a Z' gauge boson, vector-like fermions, and a singlet scalar into the framework of trans-Planckian asymptotic safety. The presence of a fixed point in the renormalization group flow allows for predictions on gamma/Z' kinetic mixing, New Physics Yukawa couplings, and the quartic couplings of the scalar potential. We derive constraints on kinetic mixing from recent LHC searches and explore the parameter space consistent with flavor anomalies through direct searches for heavy vector-like quarks and leptons.

Provable properties of asymptotic safety in f(R) approximation

Alex Mitchell et al.

Summary: We study an f(R) approximation to asymptotic safety and the corresponding cutoffs, proving properties of the solutions and eigenoperators. The scaling dimension of the eigenoperators is found to be universal in certain cases, while the coefficient b is non-universal. The results show that the properties of the fixed points and eigenoperators vary depending on the chosen cutoff function.

Asymptotic freedom and safety in quantum gravity

Saswato Sen et al.

Summary: In this article, we compute the non-perturbative flow equations for the couplings of quantum gravity using a fourth-order derivative expansion. We find two fixed points, one corresponding to asymptotically free higher derivative gravity and the other being an extension of the asymptotically safe fixed point found in the Einstein-Hilbert truncation. The flow trajectory from the ultraviolet fixed point to the infrared region suggests that quantum gravity can be asymptotically free. We also explore the possibility of asymptotic safety as another way to realize quantum gravity. We calculate critical exponents and determine the number of relevant parameters for the two fixed points, as well as evaluate the universal gravitational contribution to the effective potential for scalar fields using constant scalar fields.

Scaling solution for field-dependent gauge couplings in quantum gravity

C. Wetterich

Summary: This passage discusses the dependence of gauge couplings on a scalar field in quantum gravity and its implications, such as potential fifth forces and time-varying fundamental constants. The prediction is based on the scaling solution of functional flow equations, which reveals the behavior of gauge couplings in different scenarios. The study finds that the standard model coupled to gravity exhibits asymptotically free gauge couplings, while grand unified models have asymptotically safe gauge couplings with non-zero values at the ultraviolet fixed point.

Positivity bounds from multiple vacua and their cosmological consequences

Scott Melville et al.

Summary: Positivity bounds derived from unitarity, causality, and locality constraints on low-energy effective field theories are used to constrain various effective field theories relevant for cosmology. However, most of these bounds assume a single Lorentz-invariant vacuum, which is not the case in many cosmologically relevant models. This study explores the limitations of these bounds by investigating the covariant Galileon model, which has Lorentz-invariant vacua as well as boost-breaking vacua. The authors show how a specific positivity bound can be used to map out the parameter space and find that there are regions where none, one, or many of the effective field theory vacua can be consistent with unitarity, causality, and locality in the UV. The authors also discuss the implications of these results for cosmological observations, finding that the observationally favored region of parameter space is incompatible with a large class of vacua.

Are there ALPs in the asymptotically safe landscape?

Gustavo P. de Brito et al.

Summary: In this study, axion-like particles (ALPs) in the context of asymptotically safe gravity-matter systems are investigated. The researchers found that the ALP-photon interaction can exhibit asymptotic freedom or even asymptotic safety due to quantum fluctuations of gravity. However, the strong-gravity regime required to overcome canonical scaling conflicts with the weak-gravity bound in asymptotic safety. Therefore, it is tentatively concluded that fundamental ALPs are unlikely to exist in asymptotically safe gravity-matter systems. The experimental discovery of ALPs would provide valuable insights into the quantum nature of gravity.

Naturally small Yukawa couplings from trans-Planckian asymptotic safety

Kamila Kowalska et al.

Summary: In this paper, we discuss the dynamical generation of arbitrarily small Yukawa couplings in gauge-Yukawa systems embedded in the framework of trans-Planckian asymptotic safety. The presence of a non-interactive infrared-attractive fixed point allows for the generation of these couplings, while additional ultraviolet-attractive fixed points ensure the well-defined nature of the theory at infinitely high scales. We apply this mechanism to the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model extended with right-handed neutrinos and a new-physics model with sterile-neutrino dark matter, yielding solutions in agreement with experimental measurements.

Configuration space for quantum gravity in a locally regularized path integral

Benjamin Knorr et al.

Summary: This article discusses some aspects of the metric configuration space in quantum gravity in the background field formalism. A necessary and sufficient condition for the parametrization of Euclidean metric fluctuations is given, which preserves the signature of the metric in all configurations and provides a bijective map between full Euclidean metrics and metric fluctuations. For foliatable manifolds, a method to parametrize fluctuations to preserve foliatability is shown. The implementation of inequality constraints for preserving the signature on the configuration space in the Lorentzian quantum gravitational path integral is discussed, particularly in a nonperturbative renormalization group setup.

Weak-gravity bound in asymptotically safe gravity-gauge systems

A. Eichhorn et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the existence of the weak-gravity bound in systems with more than one gauge field for the first time. We find that systems with 12 gauge fields, such as the Standard Model, still exhibit a weak-gravity bound, and that the gravitational fixed point can evade it. Additionally, we test the robustness of previous results on the weak-gravity bound by exploring their dependence on a gravitational gauge parameter. Furthermore, the existence of the weak-gravity bound has important implications for the spacetime dimensionality.

The results also touch upon the ultraviolet stability of the fixed point and the dominance of gravity fluctuations in minimally coupled gravity-matter systems, as well as important physics properties such as locality of the theory, diffeomorphism invariance, background independence, unitarity, and access to observables, while outlining open challenges.
