The dynamics of domain wall strings

Jose J. Blanco-Pillado et al.

Summary: We study the dynamics of domain wall solitons in (2 + 1)d field theories and find that, at low curvatures, they behave as predicted by the Nambu-Goto action. We also investigate the effects of internal mode excitations and uncover a new parametric resonance instability. Additionally, we discuss the implications of our findings for cosmological networks of defects.

Parametric resonances in axionic cosmic strings

Jose J. Blanco-Pillado et al.

Summary: In this study, we have discovered a new parametric resonance phenomenon of axionic cosmic strings. This process is initiated by the internal mode excitations on the strings, which resonantly amplify the amplitude of transverse displacements. By conducting numerical simulations in a (3+1) dimensional lattice field theory, we have confirmed the existence of this phenomenon and compared the results with the expected behavior from the effective Lagrangian of the mode amplitudes and interactions. Additionally, we have examined the massless and massive radiation produced by these excited strings and discussed its significance in interpreting the results of current numerical simulations of axionic cosmic string networks.

Exciting the domain wall soliton

Jose J. Blanco-Pillado et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of a single bound state in the domain wall kink solution with a slow decay rate. By simulating cosmological phase transitions, it is found that the energy of kinks formed has a 20% excess. Furthermore, the interaction of kink solutions with a thermal bath leads to an increase in the amplitude of the localized excitation with temperature.

Abelian-Higgs cosmic string evolution with multiple GPUs

J. R. C. C. C. Correia et al.

Summary: The study shows that topological defects form at cosmological phase transitions, with cosmic strings and superstrings potentially leading to interesting astrophysical and cosmological consequences. However, current research in this area is constrained by the availability of accurate numerical simulations, which in turn is bottlenecked by hardware resources and computation time.

Internal excitations of global vortices

Jose J. Blanco-Pillado et al.

Summary: Through numerical experiments, we found that vortices can dynamically excite localized excitation modes when interacting with external sources or other vortices. However, during the course of cosmological evolution, the level of excitation in vortices remains very small.

High resolution calibration of the cosmic strings velocity dependent one-scale model

J. R. C. C. C. Correia et al.

Summary: The study calibrates the canonical velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS) model for cosmic string evolution using high resolution numerical simulations, showing the importance of investigating the sensitivity of VOS model parameters based on the largest set of high resolution simulations to date. Particularly, the research sheds light on the crucial understanding of loop chopping efficiency for observations through exploring the impact of key numerical parameters.

Loop decay in Abelian-Higgs string networks

Mark Hindmarsh et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Abelian-Higgs model, loops formed by intersections of infinite strings from random-field initial conditions disappear quickly, with lifetimes proportional to their initial rest-frame length. However, oscillating nonself intersecting loops constructed using a new method have lifetimes scaling differently. The study also shows differences in mean-square velocity and proposes a parameter to quantify uncertainty in loop survival.
