The Migdal effect in semiconductors for dark matter with masses below ∼ 100 MeV

Kim V. Berghaus et al.

Summary: Using an effective field theory, we expand the calculation of the Migdal effect in semiconductors to describe the scattering of dark matter off a nucleus with small momentum transfer. The measurable dynamic structure factor of the semiconductor, which includes vibrational degrees of freedom, fully quantifies our analytical result. We demonstrate that approximating the nuclei in the crystal as free ions can accurately capture the Migdal rate and the shape of the electron recoil spectrum, but the differential rate of energy deposition to the crystal depends on the phonon dynamics encoded in the dynamic structure function of the specific material. Our findings enable evaluation of the Migdal effect in semiconductors, even for the lightest dark matter candidates kinematically capable of exciting electrons.

Precise predictions and new insights for atomic ionization from the Migdal effect

Peter Cox et al.

Summary: In this study, we revisit and improve calculations of the Migdal effect by using the Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. Unlike previous studies, our approach does not rely on the dipole approximation, allowing for more accurate results at higher nuclear recoil velocities. These calculations provide a theoretical basis for future measurements of the Migdal effect using neutron sources and for the search for dark matter in direct detection experiments. We also highlight the importance of considering multiple ionization in experiments with fast neutrons and derive the semi-inclusive probability for processes that produce high-energy electrons above a defined threshold. Our results include noble elements up to xenon, as well as carbon, fluorine, silicon, and germanium, with the transition probabilities publicly available.

Measuring the Migdal effect in semiconductors for dark matter detection

Duncan Adams et al.

Summary: The Migdal effect has drawn significant attention in the dark matter direct detection community as it is powerful in constraining sub-GeV particle dark matter. Confirming the Migdal effect through nuclear scattering using the Standard Model probes is essential. This study extends the Migdal effect calculations to neutron-nucleus scattering, focusing on neutron scattering angle distributions in silicon. The authors identify kinematic regimes where the assumptions made in current calculations hold and propose an experimental strategy to measure the Migdal effect using cryogenic silicon detectors at the upgraded NEXUS facility in Fermilab.

Fueling the search for light dark matter-electron scattering with spherical proportional counters

Louis Hamaide et al.

Summary: Dark matter detectors using spherical proportional counters (SPCs) have achieved a single-electron detection threshold and are expected to have low background rates. In this study, we investigate the sensitivity of SPC detectors in the DarkSphere proposal, a fully electroformed SPC with a diameter of 300 cm, to dark matter-electron scattering. Using quantum chemistry tools, we model the atomic and molecular systems and calculate the expected event rates induced by dark matter. Our findings show that DarkSphere has the potential to significantly improve current exclusion limits on dark matter masses above 4 MeV by up to 5 orders of magnitude. Neon gas is the most effective target for both light and heavy mediators, while gas mixtures with methane or isobutane can enhance sensitivity at lower masses. This study highlights the untapped potential of SPCs in searching for dark matter-electron scattering in the MeV-to-GeV mass range.

Summary: The coannihilation mechanism is an alternative to the thermal freeze-out mechanism in explaining the relic density of dark matter. This study focuses on the coannihilation scenario dominated by partner-partner pair annihilation and explores the parameter space where the coannihilation partner is long-lived. The results suggest that the high-luminosity LHC can provide good sensitivities for heavy dark matter and coannihilation partner in the range of 100-700 GeV.

Direct detection of spin-dependent sub-GeV dark matter via Migdal effect

Wenyu Wang et al.

Summary: Motivated by the constraints on spin-independent dark matter (DM)-nucleus scattering, this study investigates the spin-dependent interactions of light Majorana DM with nuclei mediated by an axial-vector boson. The exclusion limits on spin-dependent DM-nucleus scattering are derived using existing ionization data, with a lower limit on DM mass reaching several MeVs. The presence of a light mediator weakens the bounds on spin-dependent DM-nucleus scattering cross sections compared to a heavy mediator.

Molecular Migdal effect

Carlos Blanco et al.

Summary: Nuclear scattering events with large momentum transfer in atomic, molecular, or solid-state systems may result in electronic excitations. This study presents two distinct Migdal-like effects from dark matter scattering in molecules, namely the center-of-mass recoil effect and the nonadiabatic coupling effect. The breaking of molecular bonds' spherical symmetry leads to daily modulation in the Migdal rate.

Summary: Detectors with low thresholds for electron recoil open a new window to direct searches of sub-GeV dark matter candidates. In this work, we study DM-atom scattering through a spin-dependent interaction at leading order using well-benchmarked atomic many-body calculations. Exclusion limits on the spin-dependent DM-electron cross section are derived with data from xenon and germanium detectors. The best limits set by the XENON1T experiment are comparable to the ones on DM-neutron and DM-proton at slightly bigger DM masses. Phenomenology of nuclear scattering for a WIMP of arbitrary spin

Paolo Gondolo et al.

Summary: The study provides a first systematic and quantitative discussion of the phenomenology of the nonrelativistic effective Hamiltonian describing nuclear scattering process for a weakly interacting massive particle of arbitrary spin. The analysis reveals that a high multipolarity of the coupling leads to suppression of expected rates and pushes the differential spectra to large recoil energies. This indicates that present bounds on the effective operators can be significantly improved by extending the recoil energy intervals to higher recoil energies.
