Summary: This study experimentally investigates the ductile tearing behavior of a full size precracked pipe. The pipe material is characterized using smooth and notched tensile bars and precracked C(T) specimens, and a non-local GTN model is used in finite element simulations to successfully represent the early stages of crack propagation in the pipe.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior and failure modes of fillet welded joints of high strength structural (HSS) steels through numerical simulations. The influences of triaxial stress states on fracture ductility of weld metals are examined, and the accuracy of different fracture models is compared. The numerical simulations with calibrated ductile fracture models successfully capture the load-displacement behavior and failure modes of the transverse fillet welds.

A continuous dynamic constitutive model for normal- and high-strength structural steels

Xiaoqiang Yang et al.

Summary: The use of numerical models in the advanced analysis and design of steel structures, particularly under extreme loading conditions, is becoming more common. This paper presents a systematic study on the dynamic constitutive modeling of structural steels, including the effects of strain rate on stress-strain characteristics. Experimental tests were conducted to establish a database of dynamic test results, and a continuous dynamic constitutive model was proposed to predict the dynamic stress-strain response of structural steels at different strain rates.

Fangfang Liao et al.

Summary: Finite element models were established to predict the ductile fracture of beam-column connections with initial defects, and J-integral, VGM, and SMCS model were used for fracture prediction. The results showed that initial defect location, length, notch radius, and weld access hole form had influences on fracture index. This study provided theoretical support for predicting the fracture of beam-column connections.

Summary: Research has shown that the modified GTN model with dual damage variables can effectively describe the fracture behavior of SLM-fabricated Ti6Al4V alloy under complex stress states. By introducing a stress state-dependent function, the model's application has been extended, and a finite element based inverse analysis strategy has been proposed for parameter calibration.

Fracture investigation of different welded steel beam-column connections under three-point bending test

Ibrahim Yelek et al.

Summary: Steel structures are often preferred in construction for their lightweight and durability. However, challenges arise in connecting steel structures due to mechanical imperfections caused by secondary processes such as welding. This study examined the performance of different column-beam connections welded using HEB120 profile under extreme loads, gathering data through tests and fractographic examination.Finite element analysis was also conducted to investigate fracture behavior, with materials modeled for elasto-plastic behavior and stress-strain curves extended using Swift-Voce hardening law.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study on the structural behavior and resistances of 5960 ultra-high strength steel welded I-section columns failing by flexural buckling about the minor principal axis. The study includes experimental tests, numerical modeling, and an assessment of existing design codes, revealing that the design buckling curve in the American specification provides accurate resistance predictions for these columns. Furthermore, a revised Eurocode design buckling curve is proposed for more accurate predictions.

The modified GTN-Thomason criterion for modelling of ductile fracture considering shear factor and size effect in micro-scaled plastic deformation

W. T. Li et al.

Summary: Coarse grains result in fewer voids on fracture surfaces and higher flow strength, while finer grains accelerate the occurrence of shear-dominated fracture and hinder normal tensile fracture. By introducing shear factor and size effect, the modified GTN-Thomason criterion predicts ductile fracture in micro-scaled plastic deformation and enhances understanding and prediction of ductile fracture.
