Antibacterial gas therapy: Strategies, advances, and prospects

Tian-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: One of the challenges in antibacterial therapy is the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. This review focuses on the potential use of gases like nitric oxide and carbon monoxide as bactericidal agents, which can effectively kill bacteria, disperse biofilms, and aid wound healing without promoting resistance. The review also discusses recent advances in gas-involved systems for antibacterial, antibiofilm, and wound treatment applications, and provides insights for the future design and application of advanced antibacterial gas therapy.

Controlling the length of porphyrin supramolecular polymers via coupled equilibria and dilution-induced supramolecular polymerization

Elisabeth Weyandt et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the modulation of aggregate morphology in a zinc porphyrin-based supramolecular system through the judicious use of a manganese porphyrin monomer. The chirality of the monomer can influence the supramolecular behavior.

Cationic porphyrin-based nanoparticles for photodynamic inactivation and identification of bacteria strains

Lin Li et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic drug resistance has led to the development of alternative strategies such as antibacterial photodynamic therapy (APDT). In this study, cationic porphyrin-based nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and shown to have intrinsic antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria. These NPs also exhibited good hemocompatibility and low cytotoxicity.

Surface-Catalyzed Nitric Oxide Release via a Metal Organic Framework Enhances Antibacterial Surface Effects

Mark Garren et al.

Summary: The combination of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and NO donors can effectively accelerate the release rate of NO for therapeutic applications, preventing biofilm formation on medical devices. Through intrapolymeric interactions, tunable NO surface fluxes can elicit different cytotoxic responses in human cell lines, showing potential for application-specific tailoring. Enhanced NO release from the composite materials was found to significantly reduce bacterial growth, indicating a promising approach for combating opportunistic bacteria.

Covalent Organic Frameworks and Supramolecular Nano-Synthesis

Kaushik Dey et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exist in diverse forms in bulk, with distinct nanostructures impacting the properties of their bulk counterparts, yet the focus remains primarily on the covalent reticular structure, neglecting the chemistry of COFs at the nano regime. The synthetic design of COFs can be extended beyond the molecular framework to the nano-meso-macroscale hierarchy, showcasing the importance of hierarchical assembly in COF nanosynthesis.
