Water-regulated and bioinspired one-step pyrolysis of iron-cobalt nanoparticles-capped carbon nanotubes/porous honeycombed nitrogen-doped carbon composite for highly efficient oxygen reduction

Yu-Ping Chen et al.

Summary: In order to achieve commercial applications of green fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries, it is important to design and synthesize low-cost, high-efficiency, and ultra-stable transition metal-based electrocatalysts for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanoparticles-capped carbon nanotubes/porous nitrogen-doped honeycombed carbon composite was synthesized via a water-regulated and bioinspired one-step pyrolysis method. The resulting material exhibited promising ORR activity, surpassing homemade controls and recently reported catalysts, due to its hierarchically porous honeycombed structures, large specific surface area, high conductivity, and stable sites for anchoring FeCo nanoparticles (NPs). The coupling of N-doped carbon nanotubes with homogeneous FeCo NPs greatly improved the catalytic activity and stability of ORR.

Theophylline-regulated pyrolysis synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes with iron-cobalt nanoparticles for greatly boosting oxygen reduction reaction

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing economical, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial in alleviating the energy shortage. In this study, FeCo alloy was successfully confined in N-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCo/NCNTs-800) with the assistance of theophylline (THP), which can be easily extracted from natural plants. The resulting FeCo/NCNTs-800 catalyst exhibited superior ORR performance compared to commercial Pt/C (50 wt%) in an alkaline solution, providing a feasible strategy for the development of transition metal-based carbon catalysts in alkaline fuel cells.
