The use of catalysis for faster CO2 absorption and energy-efficient solvent regeneration: An industry-focused critical review

Frederick de Meyer et al.

Summary: Absorption in an aqueous amine solution is the most mature industrial process for capturing CO2 but hindered by high costs. Using a catalyst may speed up absorption and lower energy costs, though regeneration is fundamentally controlled by thermodynamics. Research aims to align with industrial reality, emphasizing the need for more industry-focused experiments and analysis on the benefits of catalyst use.

Relationship between tertiary amine's physical property and biphasic solvent's CO2 absorption performance: Quantum calculation and experimental demonstration

Yanan Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the physical properties of tertiary amines and the phase separation behavior and absorption rate of biphasic solvents through quantum calculation and experimental results. The high electronegativity of the tertiary amine N atom leads to a fast phase separation rate and absorption rate, while increasing the polarity of the N atom can stabilize absorption rate. Overall, this relationship could enhance the understanding for screening and practical application of biphasic solvents.

A pore matching amine-functionalized strategy for efficient CO2 physisorption with low energy penalty

Yao Shen et al.

Summary: This study proposed a pore matching strategy to synthesize sorbents with low energy penalty and superior capacity for efficient CO2 capture from flue gas. The tetraethylenepentamine-based PMAA@ZIF-8 samples obtained through this strategy exhibited low isosteric adsorption heat, high adsorption capacity, adsorption rate constant and selectivity compared to pristine ZIF-8. The CO2 physisorption mechanism onto tetraethylenepentamine-based PMAA@ZIF-8 was elucidated through various analysis techniques.

Experimental investigation of CO2 adsorption and desorption on multi-type amines loaded HZSM-5 zeolites

Huaigang Cheng et al.

Summary: Solid adsorbents were prepared by fixing amines to HZSM-5 zeolites via wet impregnation method, and the CO2 adsorption properties were investigated in a fixed-bed adsorption system followed by the structural, thermodynamic and kinetic studies. The study found that HZSM-5 zeolite with a Si/Al ratio of 25 and an average particle size of about 2.3 μm is an effective CO2 adsorbent support, and CO2 adsorbents supporting MEA and AEEA exhibit good CO2 adsorption capacities. The AEEA loaded HZSM-5 adsorbent shows high adsorption-desorption stability in the regeneration cycle tests, indicating energy efficiency in the CO2 desorption process and low CO2 capture cost.

Solvent Impregnated Polymers Loaded with Liquid-Like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials for Enhanced Kinetics of Direct Air Capture and Point Source CO2 Capture

Guanhe Rim et al.

Summary: Hybrid CO2 capture materials known as solvent impregnated polymers (SIPs) have been developed to improve the capture kinetics of high viscosity water-lean solvents. By incorporating liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid materials functionalized with polyethylenimine (NOHM-I-PEI) into a shell material and UV-curing it, gas-permeable solid sorbents with uniform loading (NPEI-SIPs) are produced. The CO2 capture kinetics of NPEI-SIPs have shown a significant increase due to the SIP design, providing a larger interfacial surface area for CO2 adsorption. The optimal loading of NOHM-I-PEI and sorption temperature were found to be around 49 wt% and 50 degrees Celsius, respectively, while NPEI-SIPs exhibited good thermal stability over multiple temperature swing cycles. Under humid conditions, NPEI-SIPs demonstrated high CO2 loadings for different concentrations, suggesting their effectiveness in capturing CO2 from various sources.

A Novel Dual-Stage Phase Separation Process for CO2 Absorption into a Biphasic Solvent with Low Energy Penalty

Xiaowei Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel dual-stage phase separation process was proposed for CO2 capture, which separated a certain proportion of CO2-enriched phase in the biphasic solvent to reduce viscosity and improve absorption rate. The process effectively reduced the energy penalty and heat duty compared to conventional methods. The H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance analysis confirmed the control of absorption products generation and intensified interphase migration of tertiary amines in the dual-stage phase separation process.
