Exploring the economic impacts of carbon tax in China using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model under a perspective of technological progress

Yuanhua Chang et al.

Summary: The carbon tax, as an environmental regulation tool, can promote technological progress, which has been overlooked in previous evaluations of its economic impact. This study uses the Generalized Method of Moment model to examine the effect of an environmental tax on total factor productivity and energy efficiency. The findings suggest that a carbon tax policy initially negatively impacts GDP but can become positive in the later stages due to technological progress and a transition to low-carbon industries.

Energy endowment, environmental regulation, and energy efficiency: Evidence from China

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates energy efficiency across provincial regions in China and finds varying levels of efficiency among different areas, as well as confirms the presence of a resource curse at the national level. Additionally, market-based environmental regulations have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between energy endowment and energy efficiency, while command-and-control environmental regulations do not have a significant effect.

The general equilibrium impacts of carbon tax policy in China: A multi-model comparison

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: We conducted a multi-model comparison of a carbon tax policy in China, finding that while the 2030 NDC target can easily be met in all models, the 2060 carbon neutrality goal cannot be achieved even with the highest carbon tax rates. The 8 CGE models differed substantially in terms of impacts on the macroeconomy, aggregate prices, energy use, carbon reductions, industry level output, and price effects.

Mitigating poverty: The patterns of multiple carbon tax and recycling regimes for Peru

Summary: Carbon taxes are effective in addressing climate change mitigation, but may have distributional impacts. Redistributing tax revenues through social assistance can decrease poverty. Studies show that proper redistribution of taxes can reduce poverty rates.

A computable general equilibrium analysis of environmental tax reform in Japan with a forward-looking dynamic model

Shiro Takeda et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of environmental tax reform in Japan and finds that environmental tax reform tends to generate more desirable impacts than a pure carbon tax. In particular, reducing corporate taxes leads to the most desirable outcomes in terms of GDP and national income.

Treatment of indirect emissions from the power sector in Korean emissions trading system

Yong-Gun Kim et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of carbon pricing on the economy, emphasizing the power sector under retail-price control. The simulation analysis suggests that granting the power sector a carbon pricing waiver should be avoided to prevent a heavy burden on the economy. In the case of the Korean emissions trading system, relief of excessive carbon price burden in the power sector can be achieved through intensity-based updating allocation of allowances. Surprisingly, treating fossil and non-fossil power plants equally when implementing output-based updating allowance allocation for the power sector can lead to higher economic efficiency.
