A comparative study on the combustion process and emissions formation of a CI engine fueled with isomers n-octanol and di-n-butylether

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study compares compression ignition engines fueled by two C8 biofuels, OCT and DnBE, in terms of combustion characteristics and emissions formation. The results show that the DnBE fueled engine exhibits a shorter ignition delay, longer combustion duration, and produces more NO emissions compared to the OCT fueled engine. On the other hand, the OCT fueled engine produces fewer particle number and mass, but higher CO emissions.

Pilot diesel-ignited ammonia dual fuel low-speed marine engines: A comparative analysis of ammonia premixed and high-pressure spray combustion modes with CFD simulation

Xinyi Zhou et al.

Summary: The decarbonization of global shipping is crucial in mitigating climate change, and ammonia has been identified as a sustainable and zero-carbon fuel for the maritime industry. Despite existing studies primarily focusing on automotive engines, research on marine low-speed engines is limited. This paper establishes numerical models for a pilot diesel-ignited ammonia dual-fuel engine, utilizing a commercial low-speed marine diesel engine as a prototype. The models are validated with experimental data, and engine performance and emissions are studied and optimized under both premixed and high-pressure spray combustion modes.

Effects of Combustion Chamber Shapes on Combustion and Emission Characteristics for the N-Octanol Fueled Compression Ignition Engine

Dajian Wang et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the effects of combustion chamber shapes on the combustion and emission characteristics of a n-octanol fueled compression ignition engine. The results show that increasing the throat radius improves the combustion and emission characteristics, while widening the throat significantly improves the indicated mean effective pressure and reduces NOx and soot emissions.

Evaluating performance and emissions of a CI engine fueled with n-octanol/diesel and n-butanol/diesel blends under different injection strategies

Jing Li et al.

Summary: N-octanol and n-butanol in diesel blends exhibit lower fuel reactivity and can mitigate knocking tendency, improve thermal efficiency, and reduce NOx and black carbon emissions with split injection strategy. However, adding these alcohols increases HC emissions.

Influence of quaternary combinations of biodiesel/methanol/n-octanol/diethyl ether from waste cooking oil on combustion, emission, and stability aspects of a diesel engine

Ahmed EL-Seesy et al.

Summary: Methanol is considered a promising renewable fuel for diesel engines, but faces challenges due to phase separation, low cetane number, and high latent heat of vaporization. This study aimed to improve methanol's usability in diesel engines by using n-octanol and diethyl ether as cosolvents and ignition improvers. The addition of n-octanol improved solubility, but the blends showed lower cylinder pressure and thermal efficiency compared to waste cooking oil biodiesel alone. Engine emissions of nitrogen oxide levels decreased with the blends, but carbon monoxide and smoke opacity increased.
