Life cycle analysis of gasification and Fischer-Tropsch conversion of municipal solid waste for transportation fuel production

Uisung Lee et al.

Summary: Non-recyclable municipal solid waste can be converted into liquid fuel through gasification and Fischer-Tropsch processes. This study evaluates the carbon intensities of these fuels and examines key factors that could affect their sustainability, such as fossil carbon content, diversion from landfills, and conversion efficiency. The results show a wide range of carbon intensities for fuels produced from different waste streams, some of which may exceed those of petroleum fuels.

Evaluation of performance variables to accelerate the deployment of sustainable aviation fuels at a regional scale

Arpit H. Bhatt et al.

Summary: The increasing consumption and emissions of jet fuel worldwide have created the necessity for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies. One option is to use waste or biomass-based feedstocks, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. This study evaluates the implications of key variables on the deployment of SAF at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and finds that woody biomass-based Fischer-Tropsch technology has the lowest production costs and reduces GHG emissions by 86% compared to conventional jet fuel.

Cumulative Impact of Federal and State Policy on Minimum Selling Price of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Kristin L. Brandt et al.

Summary: With the projected doubling of jet fuel consumption by 2050, the widespread use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality in the aviation industry. However, the high price of SAF has hindered its adoption, highlighting the need for strong and stable policy support. Techno-economic analyses were conducted to assess different production pathways and feedstocks, revealing that hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFAs) using waste lipid feedstocks are the most viable near-term option. Municipal solid waste (MSW) converted through Fischer-Tropsch (FT) was found to have the lowest minimum selling price (MSP). Overall, the analysis emphasizes the importance of policy and feedstock availability in driving SAF adoption.

Cost-effective reduction of fossil energy use in the European transport sector: An assessment of the Fit for 55 Package

Marten Ovaere et al.

Summary: This paper surveys climate and energy policy in the EU transport sector, summarizing current policies and linking different instruments to market failures. The cost-efficiency of the policies and instruments is analyzed, and areas for improvement are identified. The paper also highlights the global impact of European policies and the need to consider these side effects.

Evaluating Landfill Diversion Strategies for Municipal Organic Waste Management Using Environmental and Economic Factors

Philip Tominac et al.

Summary: Municipal organic waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and policymakers need to align incentive programs with environmental goals. The MOW disposal infrastructure in Milwaukee incentivizes residents to minimize emissions by sending waste to sites with lower costs and closer proximity, potentially limiting landfill disposal options. GHG reduction policies prioritize anaerobic digestion, but outcomes depend on tipping fees and transport distances.

Supply chain configuration of sustainable aviation fuel: Review, challenges, and pathways for including environmental and social benefits

Lina Martinez-Valencia et al.

Summary: The study delves into the conceptual components required for the design and analysis of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chains, underscoring the potential impact of monetizing environmental and social services on the overall viability of SAF production. Comparisons are made between the current state of SAF supply chain configuration and other supply chain strategies, with a focus on potential strategies to enhance the existing approach and improve the SAF business model.

Global biorenewable development strategies for sustainable aviation fuel production

Kok Siew Ng et al.

Summary: The global commercial aviation industry is increasingly incorporating biojet fuels, with the HEFA pathway considered the most cost-effective and low greenhouse gas emission option. However, competition with the road transport biofuel market poses a challenge. Promoting lignocellulosic biomass and waste feedstock is advised to reduce emissions from food/feed crops and indirect land use change.

Regulatory and Policy Analysis of Production, Development and Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in the United States

Ekrem Korkut et al.

Summary: The United States is expanding its law and policy to incentivize the use of sustainable aviation fuels, relying on voluntary programs at federal, state, and regional levels. This contrasts with the more cohesive policies adopted by the European Union and European countries, which are important for U.S. carriers to track due to the international nature of aviation.

Quantitative Policy Analysis for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Technologies

Z. Juju Wang et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the impact of different policy options on the economic viability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production technologies, finding that all technology pathways studied are not financially viable without policy aid, and the median total policy costs required for economic viability range from 35 to 337 million USD per production facility, or 0.07-0.71 USD/liter. The cumulative impact of multiple policies could result in economically viable SAF production.

Evaluating the climate impact of aviation emission scenarios towards the Paris agreement including COVID-19 effects

Volker Grewe et al.

Summary: Aviation is a key player in the global economy, yet it contributes to climate change through emissions like CO2. Despite efforts to reduce its impact through policies, regulations, and research, it is unlikely that aviation will meet emission goals aligned with the Paris Agreement, even with technological advancements and sustainable fuels.
