Pre-coagulation for membrane fouling mitigation in an aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor: A comparative study of modified microbial and organic flocculants

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of modified microbial flocculants (MMFs) with conventional organic flocculants in mitigating membrane fouling. The results show that MMF has better performance in pollutant removal and membrane fouling control. The study also reveals that cake layer formation is the main mechanism of membrane fouling and MMF can reduce the accumulation of foulants on the membrane surface. Correlation analysis indicates that total phosphorus, polysaccharide, zeta potential, and particle size have the greatest correlation with fouling resistance.

Unrevealing the role of in-situ Fe(II)/S2O82- oxidation in sludge solid-liquid separation and membrane fouling behaviors of membrane bioreactor (MBR)

Xueqin Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of in-situ Fe(II)/S2O82- oxidation on the filtration performance and membrane fouling behaviors in membrane bioreactor (MBR) for waste activated sludge treatment. The results show that Fe(II)/S2O82- oxidation significantly improves the filterability of mixed sludge liquor and alleviates membrane fouling by breaking down biopolymer matrix and releasing water from flocs. The study suggests that Fe(II)/S2O82- oxidation is a promising approach to control membrane fouling and treat sludge efficiently.

Effect of modified microbial flocculant on membrane fouling alleviation in a hybrid aerobic granular sludge membrane system for wastewater reuse

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that modified microbial flocculants (MMFs) are effective in mitigating membrane fouling, with an optimal dosage of 10 mg/L. The occurrence of membrane fouling is found to be mainly related to total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and polysaccharides in the raw wastewater.

Comparison of different cleaning strategies on fouling mitigation in hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes for river water treatment

Jaewon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment of real Cijengkol river water in Indonesia using a novel hollow fiber nanofiltration (HFNF) system. Ultrafiltration (UF) pretreatment was performed to evaluate its impact on the HFNF performance. The results showed that UF could only remove solids, while both nanofiltration (NF) and the UF-NF hybrid achieved high removal efficiency for impurities, meeting drinking water quality standards. However, organic fouling was observed in the HFNF membranes. Various cleaning methods were investigated, and chemically enhanced backwashing (CEBW) with sodium hypochlorite proved to be effective in controlling membrane fouling. CO2 nucleation backwashing also showed promising results in removing certain types of organic fouling. Overall, this study provides insights into the efficient treatment of river water using HFNF, and the importance of controlling organic fouling in membrane systems.

In-depth insights into the temporal-based fouling mechanism and its exploration in anaerobic membrane bioreactors: A review

Tongyu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the fouling mechanisms in the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The fouling development can be divided into three stages: pore narrowing, pore-clogging, and gel/cake layer formation. Different foulants play dominant roles at different stages. The interactions between the membrane and foulants are qualitatively discussed in detail.

Coupling of submersible microbial fuel cell into aerobic granular sludge bioreactor for ciprofloxacin stress alleviation: Performance and mechanism

Chuanfu Zhao et al.

Summary: A submerged microbial fuel cell (MFC) coupled with aerobic granular sludge (AGS) bioreactor was designed to mitigate CIP toxicity and improve wastewater treatment performance. The AGS-MFC showed higher removal efficiencies for NH4+-N, COD, and CIP compared to the AGS-Control. In addition, the morphology of AGS and EPS secretion were improved in the AGS-MFC group. Corynebacterium and Rhodococcus with drug-resistant electricity generation were enriched in the anodic biofilm, and the transmission of resistance genes was reduced in AGS-MFC.

A comparison of effect mechanisms of chlorination and ozonation on the interfacial forces of protein at membrane surfaces and the implications for membrane fouling control

Rui Miao et al.

Summary: The research discovered that pre-chlorination and pre-ozonation have different effects on membrane fouling behavior, with variations in the interaction forces between BSA molecules at the membrane surface. Chlorination breaks the disulfide bonds between BSA molecules, while ozonation promotes their formation, resulting in different protein deposition behaviors on the membrane surface and corresponding fouling layer structures.
