An international empirical study of greenwashing and voluntary carbon disclosure

Antonio J. Mateo-Marquez et al.

Summary: Voluntary corporate environmental disclosure has increased significantly in the last decade, but its veracity has been questioned. Previous studies focused on determinant factors for disclosure decisions, with limited consideration of carbon performance and information accuracy. This paper analyzes the impact of climate change regulations on the likelihood of greenwashing using an international sample of firms. The results indicate that more climate-related regulations reduce the propensity for greenwashing, and firms in countries with stringent regulations are less likely to engage in greenwashing practices.
