A novel insight into the microwave induced catalytic reduction mechanism in aqueous Cr(VI) removal over ZnFe2O4 catalyst

Gaoqian Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a sphere-like ZnFe2O4 catalyst was prepared and it was found that aqueous Cr(VI) pollution can be completely removed within a short time by using microwave irradiation. Surface temperature visualization tests and simulations showed that the high surface temperature of ZnFe2O4 catalysts induced by microwave irradiation played a crucial role in the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The DFT calculation further clarified the kinetic reaction process and demonstrated that Fe atoms in the ZnFe2O4 catalysts were more significant for the reduction reaction than Zn and O atoms.

Engineering electron redistribution of bimetallic phosphates with CeO2 enables high-performance overall water splitting

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: By using surface CeO2-decoration strategy, the surface electron distribution of bimetallic phosphides can be regulated to enhance their alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. CeO2-NiCoP exhibits significantly enhanced HER catalytic activity with low overpotentials of 84, 202 and 242 mV at the current densities of 10, 500 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively, much lower than those of NiCoP counterparts.

Selective degradation of organic micropollutants by activation of peroxymonosulfate by Se@NC: Role of Se doping and nonradical pathway mechanism

Yandong Chai et al.

Summary: In this study, Se@NC-x decorated with Se was successfully synthesized using a two-step calcination method with zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) as a precursor. Mechanistic studies revealed that an active complex (Se@NC-900/PMS*) was formed through the adsorption of PMS onto the surface of Se@NC-900, and this complex could oxidize phenol by rapidly decomposing PMS. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the doping of Se induced local charge redistribution, activating the catalytic potential of the initially inert carbon skeleton. Linear correlations were observed between the XLogP, Delta E, VIP, ELUMO (Se@NC/PMS)-HOMO (pollutants) values and the degradation rate constants of different micropollutants, indicating the high selectivity of the Se@NC-900/PMS system for pollutant degradation. These findings not only shed light on the role of Se in enhancing the activation of PMS in Se@NC-x, but also provide insights into the physicochemical properties and degradation performance of Se@NC catalysts.

High-loading of well dispersed single-atom catalysts derived from Fe-rich marine algae for boosting Fenton-like reaction: Role identification of iron center and catalytic mechanisms

Kexin Yin et al.

Summary: Developing effective and cost-efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) with Fenton-like performance through green synthesis is a pressing issue. In this study, highly atomically-dispersed iron single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) were successfully prepared from natural iron-rich marine algae (Enteromorpha) with iron content exceeding 1.5 wt%. The Fe-SACs derived from Enteromorpha exhibited superior activation performance based on Fe-N4-C sites, while the contribution of radicals and oxidation processes were minimal. Additionally, the Fe-SACs greatly enhanced the electron-transfer process (ETP) mechanism, enabling efficient extraction of electrons from organics and promoting catalytic activity.

Simultaneous nanocatalytic surface activation of pollutants and oxidants for highly efficient water decontamination

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Removal of organic micropollutants from water through advanced oxidation processes is hindered by excessive energy and/or chemical input, as well as the generation of large amounts of residuals. The authors propose a new water purification technology called the direct oxidative transfer process (DOTP) that can achieve complete and efficient decontamination at low oxidant dosage. DOTP differs from traditional methods in pollutant removal behavior and mechanisms, and offers favorable features such as low energy consumption, no residual byproducts, and robust performance in real environmental matrices.

Photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline over Z-scheme Fe-g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions: Mechanism insight, degradation pathways and DFT calculation

Caihua Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a Fe-g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction was elaborately designed for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The performance of H2O2 decomposition in the Z-scheme heterojunction was improved by the doping of iron, enhancing the transportability of photogenerated electrons and facilitating the spread of radicals. The study also found that O-1(2) and center dot O-2- were the main active species participating in the degradation process, according to efficacy analyses and experimental results.

Insight into metal-free carbon catalysis in enhanced permanganate oxidation: Changeover from electron donor to electron mediator

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that metal-free carbon materials can enhance permanganate oxidation for organic pollutant removal in water. However, the activation mechanism and active sites are still unclear due to the complex physicochemical properties of carbon. This study investigates the use of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a carbon material to boost permanganate oxidation and demonstrates two reaction pathways involved, namely electron donation by rGO and electron transfer mediation. The presence of oxygen-containing groups and structural defects in rGO are found to play crucial roles in electron transfer. Controlling the oxidation pathway in the rGO/PM system can be achieved by regulating the oxygen functional groups and structural defects.

Engineering Pore Nanostructure of Carbon Cathodes for Zinc Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Wenbin Jian et al.

Summary: Zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHCs) have great potential for energy storage applications due to their high power density and energy density. However, the large radius of hydrated Zn2+ ions hinders their efficient storage in micropores with limited sizes, resulting in limited specific capacitance and rate capability of ZIHCs. Therefore, understanding the extent to which pore size influences the storage of hydrated Zn2+ ions in small pores is crucial.
