The effect of sectoral differentiated water tariff adjustment on the water saving from water footprint perspective: A case study of Henan Province in China

Faguang Wen et al.

Summary: Water price reform is an effective approach to rationalize and protect water resources in water-scarce areas. This study develops a method to measure water footprint by sector and explores the relationship between water price adjustment, labor compensation, and regional water export. The findings suggest that sectoral differentiated pricing can save more export water resources compared to uniform sector-wide pricing, and industries such as agriculture, textile, leather manufacturing, timber and furniture processing, paper and printing, and chemical manufacturing in Henan Province are in urgent need of increased water charges to reduce export water resources. These findings can be utilized to improve water allocation and sustainable water use in water-scarce regions.
