Application of simultaneous dynamic optimization in the productivity of microalgae continuous culture

Summary: This paper explores optimal biomass productivity under continuous operation of the strains Dunaliella tertiolecta and Chlorella vulgaris using simultaneous optimization procedures in GEKKO Python package. Results show successful implementation with fast convergence times. In biological terms, simulations demonstrate that once an optimal pH > 8 level is reached, the sensitivity of other variables decreases dramatically.

Microalgal secondary metabolites: effect of climatic variables, seasons, and photocycles on the biogeneration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Summary: This study evaluated the production of volatile organic compounds in Scenedesmus obliquus CPCC05 under different climatic variables, seasons, and light/dark phases. A total of 45 compounds were identified, with major volatile groups including hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and terpenes. In light/dark phase experiments, 34 compounds were identified, with some specific compounds only found in the light or dark phases. The main compounds detected during the cultures were derived from the terpenoid pathways, fatty acids, and amino acid derivates.
