Using Raman Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics to Study Conformation Changes of Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate Molecules

Rachel L. Hendrikse et al.

Summary: A study using Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was conducted to investigate alkyl ethoxysulfate (AES) surfactants at different concentrations. The results showed that the conformational changes observed in MD simulations were in agreement with those obtained through Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the relative number of trans conformations increased with increasing concentration, revealing the relationship between phase structure and molecular conformation. This study has important implications for using MD to analyze the conformational behavior of other surfactants that are difficult to study experimentally using spectroscopy methods.

Investigating anionic surfactant phase diagrams using dissipative particle dynamics: development of a transferable model

Sarah J. J. Gray et al.

Summary: We investigated the transferability of DPD models in predicting anionic surfactant phase diagrams. Parameters were developed that accurately represented the phase diagrams of SDS and LAS across a wide range of concentrations. These parameters were found to be easily transferable to other systems and showed excellent agreement with experimental measurements.

Effect of Polymer Drag Reducer on Rheological Properties of Rocket Kerosene Solutions

Xiaodie Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rheological properties of rocket kerosene solutions containing drag reduction agent (DRA) using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the viscosity of DRA-kerosene solutions decreases with increasing shear rate and becomes similar to that of pure kerosene. The shear viscosity of DRA-kerosene solutions increases with longer chain lengths and higher polymer concentrations. The study provides microscopic insights into the relation between the morphologic change of polymer molecules and the rheological properties of DRA-kerosene solutions.

Studying the Structure of Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate Solutions Using Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Rachel L. Hendrikse et al.

Summary: The number of ethoxy groups in sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) has a significant effect on its phase formation and structure in water. The phase transition locations can be shifted by varying the number of ethoxy groups, and it also affects the shape of micelles and crystalline spacing.

Pure and mixed aqueous micellar solutions of Sodium Dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Dimethyldodecyl Amine Oxide (DDAO): Role of temperature and composition

Sepideh Khodaparast et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micellar phase of pure and mixed aqueous solutions of SDS and DDAO, finding that the viscosity of mixed surfactant solutions increases exponentially with decreasing temperature and increasing DDAO content. A master curve for solution viscosity in terms of micellar aspect ratio is obtained, subsuming the effects of both temperature and DDAO composition in the experimental range investigated. The intrinsic viscosity of mixed micellar solutions is significantly higher than analytical and numerical predictions for Brownian suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids, emphasizing the importance of considering interactions of soft micelles under shear, especially at high concentrations.
