Electronic Structure Changes of an Aromatic Amine Photoacid along the Forster Cycle

Sebastian Eckert et al.

Summary: Photoacids have been found to exhibit a significant increase in acidity in the first electronic excited state. This allows for real-time studies of proton transfer in acid-base reactions, proton transport in energy storage devices, and biomolecular sensor protein systems. In this study, picosecond nitrogen K-edge spectroscopy was used to monitor the electronic structure changes of a protonated aromatic amine photoacid in solution during photoexcitation and subsequent proton transfer dynamics. The results provide insight into the electronic structure, dipole moment, and energetic changes on the conjugate photobase side, paving the way for a detailed characterization of the photoacidity phenomenon.

Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy for Observing Element-specific Intermolecular Interaction in Solution Chemistry

Masanari Nagasaka et al.

Summary: Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to observe element-specific intermolecular interactions of light elements in liquid phase. The newly developed liquid cells and devices with precise photoabsorbance control are demonstrated for XAS in transmission measurement with aqueous acetonitrile solutions and XAS in fluorescence-yield measurement with microfluidic systems.

Following Metal-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer Dynamics with Ligand and Spin Specificity Using Femtosecond Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the Nitrogen K-Edge

Raphael M. Jay et al.

Summary: By utilizing femtosecond resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the ligand K-edge, it is possible to uniquely probe changes in the valence electronic structure following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation. Comparing to spectrum calculations based on density functional theory, information on the electronic structure of the electron-accepting ligand and the other ligands can be distinguished and a temporal upper limit of (250 +/- 40) fs for electron localization following the charge-transfer excitation can be determined. Spin of the localized electron is deduced from the selection rules of the RIXS process, establishing new experimental capabilities for probing transient charge and spin densities.
