Student Conceptions of pH Buffers Using a Resource Framework: Layered Resource Graphs and Levels of Resource Activation

Mary A. W. Sheppard et al.

Summary: This study investigates how students approach conceptual buffer problems using the phenomenographic method and a resource theoretical framework. The study identifies three levels of resource activation: Surface Features, Building Connections, and Interconnected. Some resources were consistently activated in all questions, while others were context-dependent. Challenges were observed in activating crucial resources and maintaining activations. The study provides specific suggestions on establishing connections between resources to promote higher-level resource activation.

Survey of the Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry Curriculum

Michelle L. Kovarik et al.

Summary: The survey of 322 analytical chemistry instructors in Spring 2021 revealed that most courses require students to take two analytical chemistry courses, with over 80% also requiring an analytical lab course. Calibration methods were rated as the most important topic, with many other key topics being taught in required courses and hands-on laboratories.

Incorporating Guided-Inquiry Experimental Design into a Traditional Buffer Titration Experiment

Shirley Lin et al.

Summary: This article discusses the transformation of a traditional confirmation experiment into a guided-inquiry experience to improve student understanding of buffer systems. The revised experiment allowed students to formulate their own procedures and determine the concentration of an unknown sample.
