Serum 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Folic Acid Levels in Progressive and Nonprogressive Keratoconus

Mehmet Gokhan Aslan et al.

Summary: This study found significantly decreased serum vitamin D levels in patients with keratoconus, while levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and calcium were similar across all groups. Reduced vitamin D levels may increase the probability of developing nonprogressive and progressive keratoconus.

Arginine Supplementation Promotes Extracellular Matrix and Metabolic Changes in Keratoconus

Tina B. McKay et al.

Summary: The study found lower levels of arginine and spermidine in KC patients compared to healthy individuals, along with higher gene expression of arginase. Arginine supplementation significantly increased levels of arginine, ornithine, and spermidine in healthy individuals, as well as significantly increased secretion of collagen type I in KC patients. Further research is needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of arginine supplementation for modulating collagen deposition in the context of KC.
