Prevalence of One-Year Mortality after Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Placement: An Opportunity for Palliative Care?

Emily Kalver et al.

Summary: This study found that a validated prognostic tool based on patient factors and health care utilization accurately predicts one-year mortality at the time of implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement. Patients with high scores have a higher odds of death within one year of the procedure. Integrating this tool into the management of patients considering implantable cardioverter defibrillators may improve shared decision making and engagement with palliative care.

Risk of ventricular arrhythmias following implantable cardioverter-defibrillator generator change in patients with recovered ejection fraction: Implications for shared decision-making

Donald D. D. Chang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at the time of generator change on the effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy. The study found that patients with persistent LVEF depression were more likely to require ICD therapy compared to those with recovered LVEF. Therefore, determining whether to replace the depleted ICD based on the patient's LVEF at the time of generator battery depletion is crucial.
