Survival Impact of Variant Histology Diagnosis in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma

Lucas M. Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the impact of variant histology on survival outcomes in upper tract urothelial carcinoma patients. The results showed that variant histology is associated with worse cancer-specific survival and overall survival, and patients with variant histology are more likely to be in advanced stages. However, after adjusting for pathological stage, the association between variant histology and survival outcomes is no longer significant.

Survival Impact of Variant Histology Diagnosis in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma

Lucas M. Nogueira et al.

Summary: Variant histology UTUC is associated with advanced stage and poor survival, and could serve as a useful biomarker for high-risk disease when pathological stage is unknown. However, finding variant histology on surgical pathology does not provide additional prognostic information beyond stage.

European Association of Urology Guidelines on Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: 2020 Update

Morgan Roupret et al.

Summary: The updated EAU guidelines on UTUC aim to assist clinicians in evidence-based management, providing recommendations on diagnosis, risk stratification, radical and conservative treatment, and prognostic factors. Due to the rarity of UTUC, there is insufficient data to provide strong recommendations. Recommendations are based on the 2017 TNM classification and emphasize individualized treatment based on proposed risk stratification.

Upper Urinary Tract Tumors: Variant Histology Versus Urothelial Carcinoma

Marina Deuker et al.

Summary: Survival of upper urinary tract variant histology tumors (UTVH) compared to upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is poorly understood. UTVH patients tend to have more advanced disease stage at diagnosis, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) showing the highest cancer-specific mortality. However, in patients with stage T1-2 disease, those with SCC or adenocarcinoma who undergo radical nephroureterectomy have similar survival outcomes compared to UTUC patients.
