A state-of-the-art review of CO2 enhanced oil recovery as a promising technology to achieve carbon neutrality in China

Shanxue Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the role of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in accelerating carbon neutrality in China, providing a comprehensive analysis of the strategies to achieve carbon neutrality and the potential of CO2-EOR as a promising technology. The data analysis shows that both reduction in carbon emissions and increase in carbon sequestration are necessary to achieve carbon neutrality. However, critical issues such as technical challenges, leakage and safety concerns, cost issues, and policy considerations need to be addressed in order to make CO2-EOR a reliable and favorable technology.

Waste cooking oil used as carbon source for microbial lipid production: Promoter or inhibitor

Zhen Gao et al.

Summary: This study developed a co-fermentation strategy using waste cooking oil (WCO) and food waste for microbial lipid production. It was found that adjusting the pH values within a certain range could increase lipid production efficiency. The produced lipid could potentially be used for biodiesel production, leading to significant reductions in CO2 and SO2 emissions from global food waste.

Identifying economical route for crude glycerol valorization: Biodiesel versus polyhydroxy-butyrate (PHB)

Lalit R. Kumar et al.

Summary: By conducting energy balance and economic assessment of crude glycerol valorization for B10 biodiesel and polyhydroxy-butyrate (PHB) production, it was found that producing B10 biodiesel is more economically favorable than PHB production when utilizing crude glycerol as substrate.

Factors affecting microbial lipids production by Yarrowia lipolytica strains from volatile fatty acids: Effect of co-substrates, operation mode and oxygen

Ana S. Pereira et al.

Summary: The study found that Yarrowia lipolytica strains can efficiently utilize VFAs for growth, but lipids production can be enhanced by adding co-substrates; a two-stage batch culture can improve lipids accumulation, and it was demonstrated that oxygen mass transfer is crucial for lipids production by Y. lipolytica from VFAs.

Rhodotorula glutinis T13 as a potential source of microbial lipids for biodiesel generation

D. Daniela Maza et al.

Summary: Single cell oils are a promising source of oils for various industrial applications, offering advantages such as circumventing the food vs. fuel controversy, independence from climate and seasonal variations, and having potential for suitable growth parameters. In this study, a red yeast strain showed high lipid production potential and fuel properties in good agreement with international biodiesel standards.

Catalytic performance and deactivation mechanism of a one-step sulfonated carbon-based solid-acid catalyst in an esterification reaction

Bingxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic activity and deactivation mechanism of a carbon-based solid-acid catalyst in the esterification of oleic acid and methanol. It was found that the formation of sulfonic esters was the main reason for catalyst deactivation in the first batch, while leaching of sulfur was the main contributor in the subsequent batches. Reducing sulfur leaching and sulfonic ester formation by changing the addition method of methanol is an effective way to extend the catalyst's service life.
