A recent update on small-molecule kinase inhibitors for targeted cancer therapy and their therapeutic insights from mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis

Pey Yee Lee et al.

Summary: Kinases play important roles in regulating biological processes and are associated with cancer. Small-molecule kinase inhibitors have revolutionized cancer treatment, but their selectivity and effectiveness are still challenging. This review provides an overview of the role of kinases in carcinogenesis, the progress of approved small-molecule kinase inhibitors, and the application of mass spectrometry-based proteomics strategies in kinase inhibitor design. It also discusses the challenges and outlook of mass spectrometry-based proteomics techniques for kinase drug research.

Anticancer properties of medicinal plants and their bioactive compounds against breast cancer: a review on recent investigations

Muhammad Idrees Khan et al.

Summary: This article introduces the role of medicinal plants and their bioactive compounds in the treatment of breast cancer. It is found that compounds in natural products have anti-cancer effects on breast cancer cells, and they work through various mechanisms, including inhibiting apoptotic pathways, blocking the cell cycle, and activating autophagy. In addition, they also exhibit anti-angiogenesis and anti-metastatic effects. However, the chemopreventive effects of different compounds on breast cancer vary.

Current and future burden of breast cancer: Global statistics for 2020 and 2040

Melina Arnold et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. There is significant geographic variation in incidence rates, with lower rates in some Asian and African countries and higher rates in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Northern America, and parts of Europe. Mortality rates show less variation, but transitioning countries still bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer deaths. By 2040, the burden of breast cancer is predicted to increase further due to population growth and ageing. Global efforts are needed to address this growing burden, especially in transitioning countries where incidence rates are rising rapidly and mortality rates remain high.
