Recent Trends in Waterborne and Bio-Based Polyurethane Coatings for Corrosion Protection

Martina Salzano de Luna

Summary: Polyurethane coatings have been widely used for protective coatings due to their versatile chemistry. Concerns over the negative impact of traditional petroleum-based and solvent-borne PUs on the environment and human health have led to the research on more eco-friendly alternatives. This review article provides an overview of the development and protective performance of green polyurethane coatings.

Properties and Fabrication of Waterborne Polyurethane Superhydrophobic Conductive Composites with Coupling Agent-Modified Fillers

Fangfang Wang et al.

Summary: By treating the fillers and using electrostatic spraying, conductive and superhydrophobic waterborne polyurethane (WPU) composites were prepared in this study. The crosslinking of the fillers with the polymer improved the uniformity of the coating and enhanced its corrosion resistance. The reaction between the coupling agent and the substrate increased the adhesion of the coating to the steel substrate, solving the problems of low adhesion and easy delamination.

In situ preparation and properties of waterborne polyurethane/edge-isocyanated hexagonal boron nitride composite dispersions

Huixiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of waterborne polyurethane dispersions were prepared by in situ polymerization of edge-isocyanated hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets suspension. The inclusion of hBN-NCO nanosheets as cross linkers and nano-fillers greatly improved the mechanical strength and wear resistance of the WPU films. Additionally, the corrosion resistance of the WPU coating was enhanced significantly.

Comparison study on chelated and non-chelated titanate functionalized graphene nanosheets for enhancement of waterborne alkyd

Haihua Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrophilic functionalization of reduced graphene oxide improves its dispersibility in waterborne resin, but diminishes its water resistance and thermal stability. While TARGOs show higher initial impedance modulus and coating resistance due to more homogeneous distribution in the resin, their corrosion resistance decreases significantly with higher content. Conversely, TRGOs exhibit optimal long-term corrosion resistance at higher content, though their dispersion in the resin is not as uniform as TARGOs.

Effects of boron nitride nanotube content on waterborne polyurethane-acrylate composite coating materials

Yong Joon Lee et al.

Summary: Waterborne polyurethane-acrylate (WPUA) and rod-type boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) composite films were studied for their excellent water resistance, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance. The composite materials were synthesized by mixing aqueous solutions of BNNT and WPUA without any organic solvents, showing promising potential for wide industrial applications.
