Accelerating the stabilization of polyacrylonitrile fibers by nitrogen pretreatment

Guanbo Wang et al.

Summary: Three different thermal stabilization processes were applied to polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers: complete cyclization in nitrogen, one-step direct oxidation, and complete cyclization in nitrogen followed by oxidation in air. The oxygen content was used to evaluate pre-oxidation degree, and fibers with similar oxygen content obtained from the one-step and two-step methods were compared. Thermal stability, structure, and morphology of the three stabilized fibers were analyzed using TGA, FTIR, XPS, and SEM. Some structural differences were found between the two methods, but they had little impact on the final carbon fiber properties. The two-step method effectively reduced the pre-oxidation time. In conclusion, pretreatment in nitrogen can enhance the stabilization efficiency of PAN fibers, leading to low-cost carbon fiber production and wider application.
