Phase reversion-induced heterogeneous structure in a ferrous medium-entropy alloy via cryorolling and annealing

Shilei Liu et al.

Summary: A processing route involving cryorolling and annealing was used to achieve heterogeneous grain structures in a Cr15Fe55Mn20Ni10 ferrous medium-entropy alloy. Through phase reversion and partial recrystallization, cryorolled sheets exhibited a heterogeneous microstructure with multi-scale grains, resulting in higher yield strength and fracture elongation compared to room-temperature rolled sheets. The improved mechanical properties were attributed to grain boundary hardening, hetero-deformation-induced hardening, and dislocation hardening.

Dislocation reaction-based formation mechanism of stacking fault tetrahedra in FCC high-entropy alloy

Qihao Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation mechanisms of stacking fault tetrahedron (SFT) in high-entropy alloys were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The migration and thickening of grain boundaries, as well as the nucleation and glide of dislocations from the grain boundaries, were found to be the main causes of deformation, leading to the formation of SFT. Two types of dislocation reaction-based mechanisms were observed, without the involvement of vacancy aggregation or Frank loops.

Double-humped strain hardening in a metastable ferrous medium-entropy alloy by cryogenic pre-straining and subsequent heat treatment

Jungwan Lee et al.

Summary: The strain hardening behavior of a ferrous medium-entropy alloy at 77 K is presented. It shows a bimodal microstructure with different grain sizes, resulting from pre-straining and subsequent heat treatment. The presence of submicron FCC grains and GNDs enhances the yield strength, and the DIMT and hetero-deformation-induced strengthening delay necking and improve strain hardening rate.

Summary: In this paper, the damage tolerance of nanocrystalline Cantor alloys under cryogenic temperatures is investigated via molecular dynamics. It is found that the damage tolerance is significantly improved with the decrease of temperature, and deformation mechanism maps are constructed to explain the phenomenon.

Summary: The wear performance and protection ability of FeNiCrCoCu HEA coating on Cu substrate were studied using molecular dynamics, showing that the friction coefficient of abrasive particle decreased with cutting velocity. The research revealed that HEA coatings can effectively improve wear resistance, especially in areas of high stress concentration below abrasive particles.

Formation of CuCrCoFeNiO high entropy alloy thin films by rapid thermal processing of Cu/CrNiO/FeCo multilayers

Anni Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of High Entropy Alloy films through rapid thermal processing, resulting in a duplex FCC structure containing various phases with intensive nano-twins. As the annealing temperature increases, the oxygen content decreases in the films, while both HEA and Cu phases exhibit significant preferred orientations. The grain growth kinetics of HEA phase were evaluated, showing an activation energy comparable to conventional stainless steel and less than half of CrCoFeNi bulk value.

Nano-tribological behavior of high-entropy alloys CrMnFeCoNi and CrFeCoNi under different conditions: A molecular dynamics study

Yunqing Tang et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have superior properties and high wear resistance, but further understanding of their responses to different wearing conditions is needed for effective utilization. Research on nano-wear and nano/micro-machining under different conditions is limited, affecting the extension of HEAs to nanotechnological areas. This study using molecular dynamics simulations provides insight into the nano-tribological behaviors of HEAs under different wearing conditions, helping to mitigate wear or improve machining efficiency.

Friction control by tailoring deformation mechanism of interfacial grains in metals

Chenglin Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that micro-scale stick-slip motion of metals can be controlled by tailoring grain size of interfacial grains. Different grain sizes affect the friction mode, directly impacting plasticity and fracture toughness. The research revealed that dislocation slip in coarse grains contributes to large plasticity and high fracture toughness, while grain boundary migration in nanograins results in limited plasticity and low fracture toughness.
