Near-Infrared Reflection Modulation Through Electrical Tuning of Hybrid Graphene Metasurfaces

Ziqiang Cai et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a near-infrared tunable metasurface by combining graphene with Au nanostructures. The metasurface shows decent modulation efficiency, weak dependence on graphene's carrier mobility, and small gate voltages. The experimental results agree well with numerical simulations, and it is shown that the hybrid graphene metasurface can be tunable in both near-infrared and mid-infrared regions by designing the structural parameters of Au nanostructures properly.

Joint Beam and Polarization Forming of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for Wireless Communications

Shinya Sugiura et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) structure that utilizes massive reflecting elements to form desired beam and polarization of a reflected wave. The IRS is composed of unit cells with multiple variable capacitors for active tuning of capacitances to achieve full coverage of 360 degrees in the reflection phase. By switching polarization from incident wave to reflected wave and optimizing reflection phase shifts of each IRS element using the Newton method, the proposed IRS maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver in both single-user and broadcast multi-user scenarios.

Double layer of tunable graphene nanoribbons for enhancing absorption, reflection, or transmission

Taro Ikeda et al.

Summary: Graphene nanoribbons can exhibit high reflection, transmission, or absorption around a design frequency of 27THz by properly setting the chemical potentials. The system shows different behaviors based on the resonance frequency of the two graphene nanoribbon layers, with high reflection close to the incident wave and high transmission when the resonance frequencies are away from the design frequency. High absorption is achieved by detuning the resonance frequency in one of the layers. The system also demonstrates a robust angular response due to its thin structure.

Inverse Design of Metasurfaces Based on Coupled-Mode Theory and Adjoint Optimization

Ming Zhou et al.

Summary: The proposed approach based on coupled-mode theory offers a more computationally efficient way to design resonant metasurfaces compared to full-wave simulations. By combining coupled-mode theory and adjoint optimization, high-numerical-aperture metalenses with large sizes can be inversely designed. The framework shows great potential as a powerful design tool for large-scale resonant flat-optics devices with complex functionalities like angle-multiplexed metasurface holograms.
