The role of acetone-fractionated Kraft lignin molecular structure on surface adhesion to formaldehyde-based resins

Eko Setio Wibowo et al.

Summary: In this study, acetone-fractionated kraft lignin (KL) from softwood and hardwood was characterized to understand its chemical structure, elemental composition, molecular weight, and thermal properties. The results showed that acetone-insoluble KL fractions from softwood and hardwood had higher molecular weight, polydispersity, glass temperature, carbohydrate content, aliphatic hydroxyl groups, and various native wood lignin side chains. On the other hand, acetone-soluble KL fractions had lower molecular weight and polydispersity, lower glass-transition temperature, more condensed structure, more aromatic hydroxyl groups, and fewer native wood lignin side chains. Additionally, the acetone-soluble KL samples exhibited stronger adhesive force and work of adhesion towards phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins.

Revisiting the Molar Mass and Conformation of Derivatized Fractionated Softwood Kraft Lignin

Lun Ji et al.

Summary: The limited utilization of reliable tools and standards for determination of softwood kraft lignin molar mass and molecular conformation hinder the elucidation of structure-property relationships of lignin. This study revisited the absolute molar mass of acetylated technical lignin using SEC combined with multi-angle light scattering and differential viscometer, revealing an extremely compact structure of the derivatized acetone-soluble lignin.

A Review on Lignin-Based Phenolic Resin Adhesive

Xiaoyu Gong et al.

Summary: It is increasingly important to replace petroleum-based chemicals with biomass-based alternatives for the development of a low-carbon economy. The use of biobased lignin as a partial replacement for phenol in phenolic resin adhesives used in the wood panels industry can significantly reduce carbon emissions and negative environmental impact. However, the limitations of lignin's structure and activity hinder its application as an adhesive, and researchers have developed various modification methods to overcome these issues.

From acetone fractionation to lignin-based phenolic and polyurethane resins

Maryam Arefmanesh et al.

Summary: This study used acetone fractionation to increase the homogeneity of softwood kraft lignin and develop new products. The acetone soluble and insoluble fractions were analyzed for their elemental composition, chemical structure, and thermal properties. The acetone soluble fraction showed an increase of 24% in phenolic hydroxyl content. It was used to replace phenol in phenolic resin, resulting in a higher adhesion strength. The acetone insoluble fraction, on the other hand, was used to replace petroleum-based polyol in polyurethane resin, with the help of a bio-derived solvent. Tailoring the structure of kraft lignin through solvent fractionation allowed for the replacement of two major petrochemicals in resin formulations, which would otherwise be challenging due to the heterogeneity of softwood kraft lignin.

Summary: This study fractionated technical lignins using acetone solvent to reduce their heterogeneity and blended them with poly-(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) to fabricate biodegradable bio-composites. The fractionated lignins showed lower T-g values and improved dispersion in the matrix, resulting in enhanced mechanical properties of the composites.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the effect of reaction conditions, particularly the reaction atmosphere type, on the composition of volatiles generated during the pyrolysis of lignin. It was found that processing temperature has a significant impact on the composition changes of volatiles, while the pyrolysis atmosphere has minor qualitative effects but noticeable quantitative differences in their concentration. The complex molecular structure of lignin was confirmed through the identification of phenol derivatives, aliphatic oxygen compounds, and aromatic hydrocarbons as primary and secondary products of lignin decomposition.

Chemical Characterization of Kraft Lignin Prepared from Mixed Hardwoods

Ji-Sun Mun et al.

Summary: Chemical characterization of kraft lignin (KL) from mixed hardwoods (Acacia spp. from Vietnam and mixed hardwoods from Korea) revealed significant structural modifications during kraft pulping, resulting in distinct differences from milled wood lignins (MWLs). The analysis demonstrated that KL had higher carbon content but lower oxygen and methoxyl contents compared to MWLs, indicating severe structural changes during the pulping process.
