Improving the accuracy of copolymer sequence length determination by pyrolysis gas chromatography: A comprehensive study

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive workflow to ensure the accuracy of sequence determination in styrene-acrylate copolymers using Py-GC and 13C NMR. The results show that Py-GC consistently underestimates the acrylate sequence length, and calibration with 13C NMR is necessary for accurate absolute quantification. However, NMR calibration may not be required in all cases to obtain relative information on the sequence of a copolymer.

Co-Polymer sequence determination over the molar mass distribution by size-exclusion chromatography combined with pyrolysis - gas chromatography

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: The chain sequence of copolymers plays a crucial role in determining their physical properties. However, there are limited analytical methods available for monitoring the sequence of copolymers. In this study, the authors investigated the use of pyrolysis - gas chromatography (Py-GC) as an alternative method and successfully combined it with nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to obtain quantitative information on the chain sequence and composition of random and block copolymers.
