The Effects of Lutein and Zeaxanthin Supplementation on Cognitive Function in Adults With Self-Reported Mild Cognitive Complaints: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Adrian L. Lopresti et al.

Summary: Supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin may improve visual memory and learning in adults with self-reported cognitive complaints, but it has no effect on other cognitive measures or self-report measures of cognition, memory, mood, or physical function.

Dietary Lutein and Cognitive Function in Adults: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Jeffrey Li et al.

Summary: Dietary lutein may lead to slight improvements in cognitive performance in the domains of complex attention, executive function, and memory, but the effect is not significant. However, it may play a role in maintaining cognitive performance in memory and executive function. More intervention studies are needed to further explore the potential benefits of lutein in preventing cognitive decline and promoting brain health.

Dietary diversity and its correlates among pregnant adolescent girls in Ghana

Linda Afriyie Gyimah et al.

Summary: The study found that inadequate dietary diversity is common among pregnant adolescents in Ghana, mainly associated with rural living, food insecurity, and poverty. Recommendations include providing livelihood support and nutrition education to improve dietary quality and address the consequences of poor dietary diversity.

The Effect of Lutein/Zeaxanthin Intake on Human Macular Pigment Optical Density: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lisa M. Wilson et al.

Summary: Increasing intake of lutein/zeaxanthin can improve macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in adults with healthy eyes, especially at higher doses, while the effects of lutein/zeaxanthin intake below 5mg/d or from dietary sources are less clear. Future research is needed to determine the minimum dose and duration of lutein/zeaxanthin intake that is associated with a clinically important change in MPOD or visual function.

Environmental and Nutritional Determinants of Macular Pigment in a Mexican Population

Marina Green-Gomez et al.

Summary: The study found that the optical volume of MP and serum concentrations of L and Z in the Mexican sample were significantly higher than in the Irish sample, although this difference was not reflected in dietary analysis. Sunlight exposure and dietary intake were found to have an impact on MP levels, indicating the multifactorial interactions and environmental determinants of MP. These findings will be crucial for future research on eye health, visual function, and ocular pathology in Mexico.
