Engineering Bimodal Oxygen Vacancies and Pt to Boost the Activity Toward Water Dissociation

Ruofan Shen et al.

Summary: The bimodal oxygen vacancy (V-O) catalysis strategy significantly enhances water dissociation on Pt nanoparticles, leading to the highest catalytic activity among Pt-based materials in ammonia borane hydrolysis. Theoretical simulation and characterization analyses reveal that the bimodal V-O promotes water dissociation in two ways: through an ensemble-inducing effect of Pt and V-O in TiO2, and through an electron promoter effect induced by electron transfer from V-O in NiOx to Pt. This insight establishes a new avenue for designing heterogeneous catalytic materials in the field of energy chemistry.

Engineering VO-Ti ensemble to boost the activity of Ru towards water dissociation for catalytic hydrogen generation

Ruofan Shen et al.

Summary: This study established an oxygen vacancy (VO)-Ti ensemble engineering on a Ru catalyst to enhance the catalytic activity of water dissociation. The VO in the VO-Ti ensemble acts as an electron promoter, transferring electrons to the surface Ru atoms. Experimental results showed that the turnover frequency of 1.5-RTVO-4 in ammonia borane hydrolysis exceeded the benchmark value set by Ru-based catalysts. This research provides a new electronic tuning strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity of metal catalysts towards inert molecule dissociation in the next generation energy chemistry field.
