Lattice distortion or cocktail effect dominates the performance of Tantalum-based high-entropy nitride coatings

Ching-Chun Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dominance of lattice distortion and cocktail effect in the design of multicomponent protective hard coatings through experiments on Ta-based high-entropy nitride coatings. The sputtering yield and resputtering loss of metallic elements determined the chemical composition, while the high mixing entropy of multiple metallic elements yielded a solid-solution structure. The cocktail effect of the constituents decided the tribological and oxidation resistance of the coatings.

Structure and mechanical properties of multi-principal-element (AlCrNbSiTi)N hard coating

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure and mechanical performance of (AlCrNbSiTi)N MPEN coatings deposited using RF magnetron sputtering technique at various bias voltages. The results show that the coatings have a FCC crystal structure with columnar grains. The mechanical performance and wear resistance of the coatings are enhanced initially and then degraded with increasing bias voltage. The coating deposited at -150 V exhibits the highest hardness and elastic modulus, as well as the lowest wear rate.

Summary: This work investigates the phase formation and microstructure evolution of reactively co-sputtered multiple principle elemental nitride thin films in the Hf-Nb-Ti-V-Zr-N system. It addresses the correlation among elemental composition, structure, and mechanical properties of the deposited thin films, and explores the presence of a single-phase crystal structure within a wide compositional space.

High temperature fracture toughness of single-layer CrAlN and CrAlSiN hard coatings

Aljaz Drnovsek et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness of single-layer CrAlN and CrAlSiN hard coatings was determined up to 700 degrees C by in-situ scanning electron microscopy micro-cantilever deflection tests. The results show a decreasing trend of the fracture toughness with increasing temperature, with both coatings showing similar trends up to 400 degrees C but diverging at higher temperatures. The evolution of fracture toughness with increasing temperature shows similarities to changes observed in hardness in the same temperature range.

Oxidation behavior of Al-Cr-Nb-Si-Zr high entropy nitride thin films at 850 °C

Jian-Jie Wang et al.

Summary: The oxidation behavior of Al-Cr-Nb-Si-Zr high entropy nitride thin films in air at 850 degrees C follows a parabolic rate law, resulting in the formation of a triple oxide layer consisting of Al2O3/Cr2O3/Al2O3 with dispersed nanocrystalline ZrO2. Using Au nanoparticles as diffusion markers, it was observed that the outward diffusion of cations was dominant in the initial stages of oxidation, while inward diffusion of anions became predominant in longer oxidation periods.
