Corrosion resistance of Mg-Al-LDH steam coating on AZ80 Mg alloy: Effects of citric acid pretreatment and intermetallic compounds

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intermetallic compounds on the formation mechanism of Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) steam coatings and the corrosion behavior. The results showed that citric acid pretreatment significantly influenced the activity of the alloy surface, promoting the growth of the coatings and improving the corrosion resistance of the coated alloy.

Self-healing performance and corrosion resistance of phytic acid/cerium composite coating on microarc-oxidized magnesium alloy

Cerium conversion coating and sol-gel coating for corrosion protection of the WE43 Mg alloy

Summary: This work evaluates the electrochemical behavior and morphological characterization of a system consisting of a cerium conversion layer, a hybrid sol-gel coating, and the two coatings applied sequentially (duplex) for corrosion protection of WE43 Mg alloy. Different characterization techniques showed that the previous application of the conversion coating improved the surface coverage by the hybrid coating. Fitting impedance diagrams with electrical equivalent circuits allowed proposing a physical model for the coating, demonstrating its interaction with the porous Mg oxide/hydroxide layer. Self-healing properties of the duplex coating were also revealed.

Dual self-healing composite coating on magnesium alloys for corrosion protection
