Variant selection in additively manufactured alpha-beta titanium alloys

S. L. Lu et al.

Summary: The crystallographic arrangements of alpha-phase variants in different microstructures of α-β titanium alloys were investigated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. It was found that the type of variant boundaries differed in columnar-grained alloys and equiaxed-grained alloys. The selection of alpha-variants was associated with the crystallographic orientation of prior beta grains, with the presence of different variant clusters terminated on planes with different boundary energies.

Spall properties and damage mechanisms of a low-alloy steel fabricated via laser powder bed fusion

K. Yang et al.

Summary: Plate impact experiments were conducted to investigate the spall strength and damage mechanism of a low-alloy steel fabricated via laser powder bed fusion and tempering. The results showed that cracks mainly developed along the cleavage planes of the laths, and the fine lath substructure had a resistance effect on crack propagation.

Dislocation-dominated void nucleation in shock-spalled single crystal copper: Mechanism and anisotropy

C. Li et al.

Summary: Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate dislocation-dominated void nucleation in single crystal copper under shock loading and spall failure. The study found that the spall strength is influenced by the orientation of the crystal, with group II orientations showing the highest spall strength. The formation of stable immobile dislocations was found to play a key role in void nucleation.

Scanning Manufacturing Parameters Determining the Residual Stress State in LPBF IN718 Small Parts

Itziar Serrano-Munoz et al.

Summary: The influence of different scan strategies on the residual stress state of an as-built IN718 alloy produced by LPBF was investigated in this study. It was found that long scan vector strategies result in higher residual stress compared to short scan vector strategies, and 67 degrees-rotation strategies generate lower residual stress compared to 90 degrees-alternation strategies. Neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction techniques revealed significant spatial non-uniformity in residual stress distribution.
