Summary: In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-15Mg(2)Si-xTiB(2) hybrid composites in different conditions were investigated. The addition of TiB2 improved the as-cast tensile properties, while further additions resulted in a deterioration of tensile properties. Hot deformation and elevated-temperature exposure enhanced the tensile properties by fragmenting, dispersing, and spheroidizing the pseudo-eutectic Mg2Si constituents. The presence of an optimal amount of TiB2 combined with high-temperature thermomechanical processing significantly improved the mechanical properties of the hypereutectic Al-Mg-Si composites.

Summary: This research investigates the synergistic effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and in-situ synthesized titanium carbide (TiC) on the mechanical performance of aluminum hybrid composites. The study finds that the reinforcement with CNT and TiC significantly improves the micro-hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength of the composites. However, it also results in a decrease in the impact strength. Further analysis reveals the presence of CNT pull-out and CNT bridging effects from the tensile fractography of the composites.

Summary: This study presents a strategy for inhibiting the formation of columnar grains in additively manufactured superalloys. Scandium (Sc) was introduced as an oxide dispersion strengthener (ODS) into Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy to disrupt the typical columnar grains and improve the microstructure and mechanical properties. The addition of Sc resulted in the formation of Sc2O3 nanoparticles and cellular subgrains microstructure, leading to higher yield strength in the as-prepared IN718-Sc alloy.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates a novel nano-oxide dispersed Co28Cr9W1.5Si (wt.%) alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. The in-situ formation of Si-rich amorphous nano-oxide inclusions and distinct Co5Cr3Si2 nano-precipitates was observed. The interface between the matrix and the inclusions, as well as their morphologies and microstructure, were thoroughly investigated. The existence of transition boundaries between the inclusions and the matrix effectively hindered the movement of dislocations, leading to an increase in strength. The quantitative analysis revealed a significant contribution to strength caused by the in-situ formed oxide inclusions.

Summary: A novel method using pre-melted electron beam freeform fabrication was proposed to enhance the hardness and wear resistance of Zr alloys by fabricating ZrC-reinforced composites. A graphite diversion nozzle played a critical role in diffusing C from graphite into liquid Zr, leading to the formation of ZrC and consequent fabrication of ZrC/Zr composites. The interface between ZrC and Zr matrix showed negative lattice misfits, with lattice distortion and dispersion strengthening of ZrC contributing to the improved mechanical properties of the composites.
