Ligand-binding properties of odorant-binding protein 6 in Athetis lepigone to sex pheromones and maize volatiles

Lu-Lu Li et al.

Summary: The olfactory function of Athetis lepigone is mediated by the odorant-binding protein AlepOBP6, which can recognize sex pheromones and maize volatiles. This protein may play a crucial role in mating, feeding, and oviposition behaviors, offering new insights into environmentally friendly pest management strategies.

The oriental armyworm genome yields insights into the long-distance migration of noctuid moths

Dandan Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a chromosome-level genome reference of the oriental armyworm and explore the genetic bases of its migration traits using multi-omics, functional genetics, and behavioral assays. We found an expansion of gustatory receptor genes in this pest and suggested that it may use the geomagnetic field for orientation during nocturnal flight. Additionally, we identified molecular signatures that regulate the migratory syndrome coordinating reproduction and flight. These findings contribute to our understanding of developmental plasticity and long-distance migration in nocturnal insect pests.

Two Odorant-Binding Proteins Involved in the Recognition of Sex Pheromones in Spodoptera litura Larvae

Sai Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that fourth-instar Spodoptera litura larvae are attracted to cabbage laced with minor sex pheromones, and GOBP2 and OBP7 play a role in this attraction. These findings provide an important basis for exploring the olfactory mechanisms underlying sex pheromone attraction in moth larvae.

Foliar application of clay-delivered RNA interference for whitefly control

Ritesh G. Jain et al.

Summary: Foliar spray of double-stranded RNA carried on clay particles or BioClay can effectively disrupt multiple life stages of whitefly in crop hosts. The use of adjuvants enhances the uptake and movement of foliar-applied dsRNA. By delivering the dsRNA as a BioClay spray, it improves protection against immature insect stages and shows potential for complete life cycle control of whitefly and possibly other pests.

Computational and Experimental Approaches to Decipher the Binding Mechanism of General Odorant-Binding Protein 2 from Athetis lepigone to Chlorpyrifos and Phoxim

Ya-Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: The research investigated the binding mechanism of chemosensory gene AlepGOBP2 with two insecticides, identifying four key residues responsible for stable interactions and binding affinities. Significant alkyl-pi and hydrophobic interactions driven by these residues, especially Phe12 and Ile94, were found to play crucial roles in the binding of chlorpyrifos. Furthermore, the study demonstrated more efficient convergence of AlepGOBP2-chlorpyrifos/phoxim complexes in the residue-specific force field, achieving higher accuracy and repeatability in computational calculations.

The 40-Year Mystery of Insect Odorant-Binding Proteins

Karen Rihani et al.

Summary: OBPs are a family of odorant-binding proteins that play a crucial role in chemoreception of insects. Apart from their function in transporting hydrophobic stimuli to chemoreceptors, OBPs also have roles in buffering odorant level changes and hygro-reception. The physiological roles of OBPs expressed in other body tissues remain to be investigated.

Terpenes from herbivore-induced tomato plant volatiles attract Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae), a predator of major tomato pests

Pascal M. Ayelo et al.

Summary: The study found that Nesidiocoris tenuis is more attracted to tomato volatiles when the plants are infested by Tuta absoluta, but not necessarily by Trialeurodes vaporariorum. The predator is also attracted to T. absoluta larval frass, but not to T. vaporariorum honeydew or T. absoluta sex pheromone.

Three chemosensory proteins from the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, are involved in the perception of host plant volatiles

Jinfeng Hua et al.

Summary: The study shows that CforCSP1, 5 and 6 proteins are likely involved in the chemical communication between C. formicarius and host plant volatiles, affecting oviposition and feeding site preferences. These findings could potentially contribute to the development of monitoring and push-pull strategies for controlling C. formicarius.

Non-palm Plant Volatile α-Pinene Is Detected by Antenna-Biased Expressed Odorant Receptor 6 in the Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Tianliang Ji et al.

Summary: This study identified an antenna-biased expressed olfactory receptor RferOr6 used by the red palm weevil to detect the volatile compound alpha-pinene in non-palm plants. Results showed that alpha-pinene can significantly repel the red palm weevil, providing a foundation for further research on the functional studies of Or6 in the pest.
