Metabolic Engineering of Trichoderma reesei for L-Malic Acid Production

Yumeng Chen et al.

Summary: By using metabolic engineering, the filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei was successfully transformed into an efficient cell factory for producing L-malic acid. The overexpression of heterologous genes and the manipulation of the reductive tricarboxylic acid pathway resulted in increased production and yield of L-malic acid. The engineered T. reesei strain achieved the highest reported titer of 220.5 g/L in a 5 L fed-batch culture.

Enhanced β-carotene production in Dunaliella salina under relative high flashing light

Yimei Xi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of flashing light on biomass accumulation, beta-carotene content, and photosynthetic response in the green microalga Dunaliella salina. The results showed that flashing light led to higher biomass and beta-carotene productivity compared to continuous light. The study also found a positive correlation between the enhanced beta-carotene yield induced by flashing light and the increase in electron transport rate and reactive oxygen species content in Dunaliella salina.

Induction of cellulase production by Sr2+ in Trichoderma reesei via calcium signaling transduction

Ni Li et al.

Summary: This study found that Sr2+ supplementation stimulates cellulase production and upregulates cellulase genes via the calcium signaling transduction pathway. However, Sr2+ also leads to an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is detrimental to cellulase production, but can be alleviated by the ROS scavenger NAC.

Carotenoids in Milk and the Potential for Dairy Based Functional Foods

Ruth Conboy Stephenson et al.

Summary: Carotenoids are a family of over 1100 known natural pigments synthesized by plants, algae, fungi, and bacteria, necessary for mammals as they cannot be synthesized in the body. Dietary intake of carotenoids has benefits for both cows and humans, with fresh forage being a rich source for cows and fruits and vegetables traditionally being the main source for humans. The manipulation of carotenoid content in cow feed can impact the carotenoid concentration in bovine milk, which is linked to improved eye health, cognitive function, and potentially other health benefits.
