Above and beyond meat: the role of consumers' dietary behavior for the purchase of plant-based food substitutes

Population group differences in subjective importance of meat in diet and red and processed meat consumption

Summary: Consumption of red and processed meat is closely associated with negative health outcomes and environmental impact. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics related to the subjective importance of meat in diet and meat consumption. The findings revealed that men, residents of rural areas, and individuals with lower education consumed more red and processed meat and found meat to be more important. It is important to identify subgroups that consume a large amount of meat but also attach great importance to it in order to promote dietary transition towards healthier and more climate-friendly diets.

Public attitude toward and perceptions of dairy cattle welfare in cow-calf management systems differing in type of social and maternal contact

Summary: Early cow-calf separation followed by individual housing of calves is a common practice in the dairy industry. However, there is growing evidence that the public opposes these practices. A survey conducted in Canada and the United States found that attitudes and perceptions of animal welfare were more positive towards systems where calves were not separated from the cow. This suggests that there may be low acceptance of any cow-calf management system involving early separation as such systems do not align with underlying values.
