Brain-specific deletion of GIT1 impairs cognition and alters phosphorylation of synaptic protein networks implicated in schizophrenia susceptibility

Daniel M. Fass et al.

Summary: This study aims to elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. The research found that genetic variations in a set of genes involved in regulating neuroplasticity may contribute to cognitive deficits and exert their effects by perturbing the networks of these genes.

Cognitive reserve is associated with altered clinical expression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Monica Consonni et al.

Summary: Long-term life experiences, such as education, occupational attainment, leisure activities, and bilingualism, have been considered as proxies of cognitive reserve (CR), which play a significant role in modulating cognitive decline and functional impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. The study showed that all proxies of CR were positively associated with executive functions, verbal fluency, and memory domains, while motor impairment was inversely related to educational level and occupational attainment. Regression analysis further confirmed the association between CR and cognitive performances, as well as its predictive role in modulating motor functional disability in certain ALS patients.

The functioning assessment short test (FAST) applied to first-episode psychosis: Psychometric properties and severity thresholds

Silvia Amoretti et al.

Summary: Functional impairment is a defining feature of psychotic disorders, and the Functional Assessment Short Test (FAST) is a widely used instrument for measuring psychosocial functioning. This study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of the FAST and establish cut-off values for different severity gradations in first-episode non-affective psychosis patients. The FAST demonstrated strong psychometric properties and the established cut-off scores could be used in clinical and research practice to assess the psychosocial functional outcome of non-affective FEP populations.
