Child Abuse and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury among Chinese Migrant Adolescents: The Moderating Roles of Beliefs About Adversity and Family Socioeconomic Status

Quanquan Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between child abuse and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in a sample of rural-to-urban migrant adolescents in China, and explored the moderating roles of beliefs about adversity and family socioeconomic status (SES) in this relationship. The findings revealed a significant positive association between child abuse and NSSI, with the interaction of child abuse, beliefs about adversity, and family SES playing a significant role. The study highlights the importance of considering multiple resilient factors simultaneously and developing differential interventions targeting NSSI in abused migrant adolescents.

Cyberbullying victimization and nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents: Testing a moderated mediating model of emotion reactivity and dispositional mindfulness

Summary: This study found that emotion reactivity mediated the relationship between cyberbullying victimization and NSSI, while dispositional mindfulness could buffer this relationship. The suggested intervention strategies include helping adolescents reduce emotion reactivity and enhance mindfulness.

Parenting behaviors, parenting styles, and non-suicidal self-injury in young people: a systematic review

Zhi Hui Fong et al.

Summary: The systematic review examined the association between parenting behavior and parenting styles with NSSI in young people. The results showed that low parental support, high psychological control, and high reactive control were more consistently associated with NSSI, while evidence for behavioral control was equivocal. Results suggest that parenting styles play a role in the etiology of NSSI in young people.

Summary: The study highlights the positive association between parental psychological control and NSSI, with parent-related loneliness and depressive symptoms mediating this relationship. Furthermore, regulatory emotional self-efficacy moderates the indirect relationships between parental psychological control and NSSI.

Nonsuicidal self-injury behaviour in a city of China and its association with family environment, media use and psychopathology

Kaili Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that in childhood, males had a higher rate of NSSI than females, while in early adolescence, females had a higher rate of NSSI than males. NSSI shared similar risk factors in both age groups, including major family conflict and poor relationships with caregivers. In children, the risk of NSSI was associated with thought and attention problems, whereas in early adolescents, it was associated with anxiety and depressive problems.

Prevalence and Correlates of Suicide and Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Children A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Richard T. Liu et al.

Summary: Considerably less is known about self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) in preadolescence than older age groups, but the prevalence of preadolescent suicide has increased in recent years. This study aims to assess the prevalence and correlates of preadolescent SITBs, as well as compare them with adolescent SITBs in terms of associated characteristics.

Depression as a mediator between frequent nightmares and nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescents: a 3-wave longitudinal model

Zhen-Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that frequent nightmares in adolescents have a mediating effect on self-harm behavior through depression, and gender does not significantly moderate the relationship between nightmares and self-harm behavior. Therefore, assessing and treating frequent nightmares and depression in adolescents is important for preventing self-harm.

Harsh parenting and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: the mediating effect of depressive symptoms and the moderating effect of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism

Jinmeng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between harsh parenting and NSSI, which was mediated by depressive symptoms. Additionally, the moderating role of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism was observed only among adolescents with two Val alleles, with no significant relationship for Met carriers. These findings suggest that genetic variations in COMT Val158Met may play a critical role in the development of depression and NSSI.

Three-way interaction effects of early life stress, positive parenting and FKBP5 in the development of depressive symptoms in a general population

Rebecka Keijser et al.

Summary: The study showed that FKBP5 gene may play a role in the development of depressive symptoms among young adults, with significant three-way interactions found for certain SNPs with early life stress (ELS) and positive parenting style (PASCQ(pos)). Some SNPs exhibited diathesis stress patterns while others showed differential susceptibility patterns of interaction.
