Primary and secondary aerosols in small passenger vehicle emissions: Evaluation of engine technology, driving conditions, and regulatory standards

Gyutae Park et al.

Summary: This study identified the emissions characteristics of primary gas/aerosol and secondary aerosol for small passenger vehicles in South Korea using different fuel types. It was found that NH3 levels were higher in gasoline and LPG vehicle emissions compared to diesel vehicles, while carbonaceous aerosols in EURO 4-6 diesel vehicles were reduced by up to 95% compared to EURO 2-3 vehicles. The study also observed an increase in the expected SOA yield through the hot-condition combustion section of vehicles.

Effects of driving conditions on secondary aerosol formation from a GDI vehicle using an oxidation flow reactor

Niina Kuittinen et al.

Summary: The study found that emissions of primary particles from a vehicle equipped with a gasoline direct injection engine were largely dependent on cold-start conditions and acceleration events. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation showed strong correlation with SOA precursor emissions, and more SOA was formed during congested, slow speed, and braking events on highways.

Using an oxidation flow reactor to understand the effects of gasoline aromatics and ethanol levels on secondary aerosol formation

Niina Kuittinen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of gasoline fuels with varying levels of aromatics and ethanol on emissions and secondary aerosol formation from mobile sources. Results showed that high aromatics fuels led to higher emissions, while high ethanol content fuel (E78) also had potential for increased emissions under certain conditions.

Modeled source apportionment of black carbon particles coated with a light-scattering shell

Aki Virkkula

Summary: The Aethalometer model is widely used for estimating contributions of fossil fuel emissions and biomass burning to equivalent black carbon absorption, with uncertainties in interpretation due to particle size, internal structure, and other factors. Evaluating the uncertainties in apparent fractions of absorption by eBC from fossil fuel and biomass burning revealed the significant impact of size distribution on absorption.

Technical note: Emission factors, chemical composition, and morphology of particles emitted from Euro 5 diesel and gasoline light-duty vehicles during transient cycles

Summary: Changes in engine technologies and after-treatment devices can significantly impact the chemical composition of emitted pollutants, as shown in this study characterizing particles emitted by diesel and gasoline vehicles tested at a chassis dynamometer facility. The investigation revealed the largest fraction of emissions during cold-start cycles, and the identification of over 40 PAHs in exhaust particles using a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer highlighted differences in emission levels between vehicle types.
