Summary: The characteristics of urban landscape and street network have significant influences on car usage rates, with development fragmentation, urban form complexity, and circuitous street networks positively associated with car rates. However, an increase in car rates is negatively associated with population density. Implementing regional policies to reduce development fragmentation and promote compact urban forms and less circuitous street networks can help reduce motorization, especially in low density areas.

Exploring commute mode choice in dual-earner households in a small Chinese city

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that in small Chinese cities, spouses' travel mode choice is more influenced by workplace accessibility rather than residential built environment factors. Additionally, there is less evidence of residential self-selection in small cities.

Exploring the effects of the built environment on commuting mode choice in neighborhoods near public transit stations: evidence from China

Xiaoquan Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the built environment, auto ownership, and commuting mode choice near public transit stations in China. The results show that the built environment significantly influences auto-related mobility and that auto ownership moderates the impact of built environment attributes on commuting mode choice. Increasing green coverage and promoting diverse land use development strategies in transit-oriented development areas can contribute to reducing auto-related mobility and promoting low-carbon travel initiatives.

Impact of Built Environment on Mode Choice to Major Destinations in Dhaka

Paromita Nakshi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of built environment on mode choice behavior to major destinations in Dhaka using a multinomial logit model. The results show that built environment variables significantly influence mode choice and are stronger predictors than personal and household characteristics. This suggests the importance of considering land use policies to increase accessibility and density for sustainable development.

Built for active travel? Investigating the contextual effects of the built environment on transportation mode choice

Gamal Eldeeb et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of built environment attributes and their contextual effects on travel behavior, revealing the significant role of socioeconomic demographics in Hamiltonians' mode choice behavior. Sidewalk density is positively associated with walking and public transit use, while bike lane density is positively associated with biking and negatively associated with public transit use.

Carlos Eduardo Teixeira Neves et al.

Summary: The study found that built environment factors play a key role in walking choices in Sao Paulo city, especially at the origin, while individual characteristics such as age, gender, and income also influence walking choices. In developing countries, some theories may have application limits, especially in contexts of greater social inequalities.

Influence of the built environment on E-scooter sharing ridership: A tale of five cities

Jinghai Huo et al.

Summary: This study examined the usage characteristics and effects of the built environment on electric scooter sharing systems in five cities in the U.S. The temporal distributions of e-scooter ridership were similar across cities, with higher ridership in universities and urban centers. Results showed positive correlations between ESS trips and density-related factors, and negative correlations with population age and distance to city center.

Mode choice in commuting and the built environment in Mexico City. Is there a chance for non-motorized travel?

Dorian Antonio Bautista-Hernandez

Summary: The research demonstrates that socioeconomic factors are crucial determinants of commuting transportation mode choice, with factors such as age, lower socioeconomic class, and educational attainment being associated with the use of public transit and non-motorized travel. Bike use is positively correlated with distance to the city center, density of public transit stations, street intersection density, and flat surfaces, while walk commuting patterns follow a u-shaped curve with respect to the city center.
