The association between poor sleep quality and anxiety and depression symptoms in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease

Ming Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that poor sleep quality is prevalent in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease, with 47.1% of participants experiencing poor sleep quality. The study also revealed a strong association between poor sleep quality and anxiety and depression symptoms, particularly in patients with stable angina. Anxiety was identified as the main factor related to poor sleep quality in individuals with concurrent anxiety and depression. Additionally, the association between poor sleep quality and psychological symptoms was influenced by the type of coronary heart disease.

Hyperexcitable arousal circuits drive sleep instability during aging

Shi-Bin Li et al.

Summary: Sleep quality declines with age and this study identified hyperexcitable hypocretin/orexin (Hcrt/OX) neurons as drivers of sleep fragmentation during aging. Activation of Hcrt neurons increased wakefulness and aged Hcrt neurons showed hyperexcitability and impaired M-current. Disruption of Kcnq2/3 genes in young mice led to sleep destabilization resembling aging-associated sleep fragmentation.

Associations of Insomnia Symptoms With Cognition in Persons With Heart Failure

Rida Gharzeddine et al.

Summary: Although cognitive impairment is common in individuals with heart failure and has negative impacts, the connection between cognitive impairment and insomnia symptoms is not well understood. This study examined the associations and found that difficulty initiating sleep and early morning awakening were significantly linked to poorer cognitive performance in heart failure patients. Further research utilizing objective measures of insomnia symptoms and detailed cognitive testing is necessary to confirm these findings.
