Comparative investigation of coherence factor weighting methods for an annular array photoacoustic microscope

Riku Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of five coherence factor weighting methods on the image quality of a photoacoustic microscope. The results showed that the phase coherence factor and vector coherence factor methods were more effective in visualizing the microvascular structure with better vessel sharpening and noise suppression.

Estimation of aggregate size of red blood cell by introducing reference power spectrum measured for hemispherical ultrafine wire

Kyohei Higashiyama et al.

Summary: A method for estimating the size of red blood cell aggregates without using the power spectrum of the posterior wall was proposed in this study by introducing a reference scattering spectrum. The estimated sizes were accurate and successfully differentiated in vivo measurements.

Backscatter properties of two-layer phantoms using a high-frequency ultrasound annular array

Wakana Saito et al.

Summary: In this study, an annular-array transducer was used to evaluate the backscatter coefficient (BSC) in skin tissues with a complicated structure. Different correction methods were applied to improve the BSC estimate, with the method using the average attenuation of each layer found to be the most effective.

Study on photoacoustic properties of bovine cortical bone

Yoshihiko Maekawa et al.

Summary: A simple photoacoustic method was used to evaluate the effects of glycation on the properties of bovine cortical bone samples. The results indicate that glycation due to diabetes might affect the photoacoustic properties of the bone.

Improving axial resolution of medical ultrasound images by using noise-robust broadband filter based on singular value decomposition

Kenta Kawamata et al.

Summary: In this study, a design method for a noise-robust broadband filter based on singular value decomposition was proposed to improve spatial resolution in medical ultrasound. The optimal truncated order of singular values was determined using a logical approach to design a noise-robust filter, which was validated by applying it to noise-contaminated signals. Furthermore, the proposed filter demonstrated better axial resolution in a wire phantom compared to no filter and a previously designed Wiener filter.

Comparison between thermal strain and acoustic radiation force imaging methods for estimation of heat source distribution of high-intensity focused ultrasound

Nozomi Obara et al.

Summary: This study compared two targeting methods, acoustic radiation force impulse imaging and thermal strain imaging, for high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment. A linear relationship between thermal strain and temperature rise was confirmed, and differences in distribution were observed depending on physical phenomena such as the thermo-acoustic lens effect and the effect of acoustic reflection.

Relation between thresholds of free radical generation and atomization under ultrasound exposure

Takeshi Aikawa et al.

Summary: The relationship between thresholds of free radical generation and atomization under ultrasound exposure was investigated. It was found that free radical generation, change in water surface shape, and atomization had the same threshold. High-intensity nodes induced by cavitation trigger the appearance of fountains, leading to atomization.
