Scalable production of single 2D van der Waals layers through atomic layer deposition: bilayer silica on metal foils and films

Gregory S. Hutchings et al.

Summary: In this paper, it is demonstrated that a single layer of 2D-VDW SiO2 can be grown by ALD on Au and Pd polycrystalline foils and epitaxial films. The choice of Si source in ALD can enable phase control, with ALD growth on Au producing predominantly the amorphous phase and SiO deposition in UHV leading to only the crystalline phase.

Electron-Stimulated Hydroxylation of Silica Bilayer Films Grown on Ru(0001): A Combined HREELS and EPR Study

Nina F. Richter et al.

Summary: The electron-assisted hydroxylation of single-crystalline silica bilayer films grown on Ru(0001) was studied using HREELS and EPR spectroscopy. The results showed that the degree of hydroxylation is significantly enhanced for incomplete bilayer films with defects, and the reaction mechanism is different from that of ideal films. Isotopically labeled water was used to further confirm these differences.

SiO2-GeO2 Glass-Ceramic Flakes as an Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Julian D. Esper et al.

Summary: The preparation and electrochemical performance of a flake-like glass-ceramic anode material comprised of SiO2 and GeO2 for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are demonstrated. The glass-ceramic material exhibits stable reversible capacity and good cycling stability, attributed to the synergistic effects of nanocrystalline domains embedded in the glass matrix.

Hidden spin-orbital texture at the (Γ)over-bar-located valence band maximum of a transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor

Oliver J. Clark et al.

Summary: Through experimental observation and theoretical analysis, it has been found that the semiconductor 1T-HfSe2 possesses a local spin structure that can be selectively tuned by choosing linear light polarization, leading to pronounced spin polarization.

Twisting and Rippling of a Two-Dimensional Kagome Lattice: Silica on Au(111)

Nassar Doudin et al.

Summary: The intrinsic properties of two-dimensional SiO2 were revealed by forming the material on inert Au(111). The formation of a crystalline phase consisting of tetrahedral [SiO4] building units was enabled by SiO deposition. The twisting and rippling of the 2D kagome lattice provide 2D silica with the flexibility to adapt to strain and changes in the crystallographic direction without introducing defects.

Growth and Atomic-Scale Characterization of Ultrathin Silica and Germania Films: The Crucial Role of the Metal Support

Adrian Leandro Lewandowski et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the preparation and atomic-scale characterization of the thinnest films of silica and germania, using advanced surface science techniques and density functional theory calculations. Comparisons of monolayer, zigzag phase, and bilayer films on different metal supports provide insights into the network structure of glass forming materials, highlighting the crucial role of metal support in the pathway from crystalline to amorphous ultrathin film growth.

Insights into Reaction Kinetics in Confined Space: Real Time Observation of Water Formation under a Silica Cover

Mauricio J. Prieto et al.

Summary: The study investigates how physical confinement affects the water formation reaction using a model system, revealing that the rate-determining step remains unchanged in confinement, ruling out the transition state effect. Numerical simulations suggest that the H-2 adsorption process plays a decisive role in reproducing the reaction rate.

Continuous network structure of two-dimensional silica across a supporting metal step edge: An atomic scale study

Leonard Gura et al.

Summary: The atomic scale network structure of a silica bilayer film was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy at a monolayer-bilayer transition and across a supporting metal step edge. The results suggest a continuous coverage of the silica bilayer film across the step edge.
