The effect of regulated deficit irrigation on growth, yield, and berry quality of grapevines (cv. Sangiovese) grafted on rootstocks with different resistance to water deficit

Giovanni Caruso et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different irrigation regimes on the growth, yield, and berry quality of container-grown Sangiovese grapes grafted onto different rootstocks. The results showed that deficit irrigation significantly influenced vine water status and had a marked effect on berry and juice quality. The timing of water restriction also played a role, with early water limitation affecting trunk diameter while post-veraison water deficit had no effect. Yield was not affected by irrigation or rootstock. The study concluded that deficit irrigation could be used to manipulate berry quality in grapevines.

Deficit irrigation differently affects aroma composition in berries of Vitis vinifera L. (cvs Sangiovese and Merlot) grafted on two rootstocks

G. Palai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of water deficit applied at different phenological stages on the concentration of glycosylated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) responsible for the aroma of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. The study found that pre-veraison water deficit increased the concentration of glycosylated VOCs in the berries, while post-veraison deficit did not have a significant effect. The rootstock also influenced the concentration of glycosylated VOCs, with higher levels observed for certain graft combinations.

Double cropping in Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot Noir: agronomical and physiological validation

S. Poni et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative double-cropping technique for grapevines in temperate climates, utilizing forcing treatments to extend the ripening season and enhance fruit quality. Results from detailed agronomical and physiological evaluations over two years confirm the reliability and potential field application of this technique. It may allow for the production of two crops suited for different wine styles within a single season.
