Molecular phylogeny and revised classification of the Buccinoidea (Neogastropoda)

Yuri Kantor et al.

Summary: The superfamily Buccinoidea is widely distributed across different depths of the oceans, with 3351 recent species in 337 genera. Through molecular data and anatomical and radula data, the monophyly of the superfamily and the relationships among the families have been confirmed. The classification of the superfamily has been revised and new families and subfamilies have been proposed.

Studies of Benthic Fauna within the Project Assessment of the Current State of Environmental Systems in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean and Their Periodic Variability

T. N. Molodtsova et al.

Summary: This study conducted research on the benthic fauna in the Antarctic's Atlantic sector during the 87th cruise of RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. The study focused on the Bransfield Strait, the Powell Basin of the Weddell Sea, and the Orkney and Laurie Troughs. Data was collected using Sigsbee trawls, box corers, and visual observations with the AUV MMT-3500. The study provided new insights into the biodiversity and community structure of benthic communities in the Antarctic.

Benthic Assemblages of the Powell Basin

S. Galkin et al.

Summary: The study found that in the benthic assemblages of the Antarctic peninsula slope and Philip Ridge, a high proportion of filter-feeders were associated with the highest values of near-bottom tide currents. Additionally, indicator species of vulnerable marine ecosystems were collected, including Demospongiae sponges, deep-sea corals Stylasteridae (Hydrozoa) and Primnoidae (Octocorallia).

No longer monotypic: new species of the buccinoidean genera Germonea and Drepanodontus in the southwestern Atlantic (Gastropoda: Buccinidae)

Guido Pastorino

Summary: Two new species from the southwestern Atlantic waters, belonging to previously monotypic buccinoidean genera, are described in this study. These new species have shallower bathymetry compared to the previously described species, and they put both genera on both sides of the Antarctic convergence geographically. This distribution raises questions about the effectiveness of the Drake passage as a barrier, as some species are found on both sides.
