Measuring concentrations of a dye in the hemolymph of a marine amphipod: Development of a protocol for exposure assessment

Amanda dos Santos et al.

Summary: The increasing pollution of aquatic environments due to old and emerging contaminants requires the development of integrative methods for exposure assessment. This study developed a reliable protocol to evaluate the concentration of a dye in the hemolymph of a marine amphipod. The protocol showed promising results for detecting and quantifying dye exposure in marine amphipods.

The amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis as a promising model in ecotoxicology

Amanda dos Santos et al.

Summary: Near-shore marine/estuarine environments are important in the marine ecosystem, but are vulnerable to chemical pollution. The lack of model organisms with sufficient ecotoxicological information limits the ability to investigate pollution effects, especially in tropical regions. However, the circumtropical marine amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis has emerged as an important model organism in ecotoxicology. It can be easily cultured in the laboratory, and standardized ecotoxicity protocols have been developed. Studies have been conducted on the effects of various toxicants, genotoxicity, gene expression, and regeneration. Methods for determining internal concentrations of metals and organic substances have been successfully developed. Research on reproduction, growth, immune responses, and DNA damage is ongoing. P. hawaiensis has a similar sensitivity to other amphipods, and its feasibility for laboratory culture, recent ecotoxicity evaluation protocols, and expanding knowledge on its biology make it an attractive model organism and tool for risk assessment in tropical environments.

Shrimp Lipid Droplet Protein Perilipin Involves in the Pathogenesis of AHPND-Causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Chuanqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that Vp (AHPND) infection in cultured shrimp increased the expression of lipid droplet protein LvPerilipin and promoted the formation of lipid droplets. Knockdown of LvPerilipin increased shrimp survival rate and inhibited Vp (AHPND) proliferation. Furthermore, depletion of LvPerilipin increased the production of reactive oxygen species, which may be responsible for the decreased Vp (AHPND) proliferation.

Genotoxic effects of silver nanoparticles on a tropical marine amphipod via feeding exposure

Marina Tenorio Botelho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the genotoxic effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and silver salt in Parhyale hawaiensis through feeding. The findings showed increased frequencies of micronuclei, nuclear buds, and total abnormalities in organisms exposed to AgNP and Ag salt, indicating genotoxicity. However, no DNA damage was detected using the alkaline comet assay. Micronuclei frequencies were higher in the Ag salt treatment after 5 days, while similar frequencies were observed for both silver forms after 13 days.

Gender Differences in Hemocyte Immune Parameters of Hong Kong Oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis During Immune Stress

Jie Lu et al.

Summary: Gender differences in immune responses to external stimuli have been studied in many invertebrates. The study found that male oysters exhibit a more powerful immune response post-spawning, with notable alterations in specific immune parameters. Consideration of gender and subpopulation differences in bivalve immune parameters is important for future research on the impact of pathogens or environmental factors.

Recent insights into hematopoiesis in crustaceans

Man-Jun Liu et al.

Summary: Hematopoiesis in crustaceans involves the continuous formation of HSCs and diverse blood cells, essential for cellular and humoral immunity. The regulation of hematopoiesis involves changes in expression of factors, while some factors play a role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. This review provides insight into the molecular regulation of crustacean hematopoiesis, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the process.
