How product review voting is influenced by existing votes, consumer involvement, review valence, and review diagnosticity

Shih-Lun Tseng et al.

Summary: Websites that allow consumers to post online reviews also allow users to vote for helpful or unhelpful reviews. This study found evidence for herd behavior, where users' voting decisions and intentions are influenced by others' votes. The effect of herd behavior is complex and can be moderated by factors such as consumer involvement, review valence, and review diagnosticity. These findings have theoretical and practical implications for mitigating the potential negative effects of herd behavior in online reviews.

An empirical examination of newcomer contribution costs in established OSS communities: a knowledge-based perspective

Mohammad AlMarzouq et al.

Summary: To attract new members and sustain open source software projects, the authors propose a study to examine how OSS communities can encourage contributions from newcomers. They collected longitudinal data from 232 OSS projects over two years and found that community characteristics like programming language choice, documentation effort, and code structure instability affect the costs of newcomer participation. The findings highlight the importance of managing these costs to create inclusive OSS communities.

The Influence of Media Capabilities on Knowledge Contribution in Online Communities

Gen-Yih Liao et al.

Summary: Online communities are prevalent in both work and personal settings. Communication in these communities is similar to that of work and nonwork teams. We developed a theoretical model that examines how different communication capabilities influence user commitment, individual growth, and knowledge contribution in online communities. Our results show that direct user-to-user interaction has a stronger influence on knowledge contribution than knowledge repositories.

The Road to Open News: A Theory of Social Signaling in an Open News Production Community

Sheila O'Riordan et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of social signals in overcoming challenges in a hybrid peer production community, WikiTribune. Using empirical data, the study proposes a social signaling model that informs user engagement through different levels of project participation. The alignment of these signals with project strategy produces positive outcomes. This model contributes to our understanding of how challenges are overcome and advantages are leveraged in commons-based peer production.

What Questions Are You Inclined to Answer? Effects of Hierarchy in Corporate Q&A Communities

Jingchuan Pu et al.

Summary: The study found that in a corporate Q&A community, employees are more inclined to respond to knowledge seekers with higher job ranks and that knowledge providers exert greater effort when answering questions from higher-ups. Furthermore, knowledge providers who answer more questions from higher-ranked seekers and display greater effort in their answers are more likely to get promoted in subsequent years.

How Network Embeddedness Affects Real-Time Performance Feedback: An Empirical Investigation

Mariia Petryk et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of network positions on performance rating scores in real-time performance feedback systems. The findings suggest that an individual's positional embeddedness is positively associated with the rating score they give to others, while their structural embeddedness is negatively associated with the rating score. The study also uncovers the moderating effects of anonymity, hierarchy, and sentiment of textual comments on the role of network embeddedness.

Knowledge-sharing ties and equivalence in corporate online communities: A novel source to understand voluntary turnover

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: An increasing number of companies are using corporate online communities to facilitate internal knowledge sharing. This study finds that an employee's voluntary turnover is related to their knowledge-sharing activities in the online community. Employees who establish bidirectional knowledge-sharing ties and have a higher equivalence of knowledge-sharing ties are less likely to voluntarily leave their company.

A RANDOMIZED FIELD EXPERIMENT TO EXPLORE THE IMPACT OF HERDING CUES AS CATALYSTS FOR ADOPTION

Yue (Katherine) Feng et al.

Summary: This article examines the effects of herding cues as an implementation intervention to accelerate technology adoption. The results show that herding cues directly impact the time it takes for an individual to adopt a technology, amplify the effects of peer behaviors, but have no impact on the effect of subjective norms, and dampen the effects of an individual's private beliefs about the usefulness of a technology.
