The effect of social interaction quantity and quality on depressed mood and loneliness: A daily diary study

Summary: The study found that social interaction quantity and perceived responsiveness were negatively associated with daily depressed mood and loneliness. Perceived responsiveness was also negatively associated with depressed mood and loneliness at the within-person level of analysis. However, there was substantial heterogeneity in the within-person effects.

Studies suggest that loneliness increased in the months or years before the pandemic, while it remained stable or decreased in the weeks or days before the pandemic; the quality of social relationships was perceived worse during the pandemic, and the quantity of social interactions was reported to decrease linearly over time.
